'Cork Before Cork' Tour

Cork Before Cork Tour

Heritage week kicks off with a revealing tour with geologist Anthony Beese who has spent years studying what lies beneath the smartly paved streets and roadways of the city.

This Saturday August 21st 2010 at midday you can join a unique walk through the streets of Cork learning about the fascinating estuary upon which Cork was built. 'Corcaigh' means marsh and it was these marshy islands that once characterised the watery environment of Cork.

South Gate Bridge from Nano Nagle Bridge

The construction of canals and land-claim in the Medieval city will also be explored.

The tour is FREE and will set off from the southern end of Grand Parade near Nano Nagle Bridge (the foot bridge to Sullivans Quay at midday).

For anyone interested in the medieval history of Cork or simply intrigued by the complexity of what lies underneath the city this is a fantastic opportunity to learn even more about the Venice of the north!
