New artists and a range of interesting sideshow events have been added to the line-up for this year's budding eclectic music festival Murphy's Live presents Cork X Southwest.

The Walls: more Clare men taking on Cork this weekend.

The Main Stage will now feature Clare's favourite sons The Walls and melodic LA jazz-electro outfit Helios Jive as well as acclaimed national and international music acts, including Cathy Davey, Jape, Malian virtuoso guitarist Afel Bocoum and The Agnostic Mountain Gospel Choir with their ferocious combination of traditional blues, Appalachian folk and ragged gospel. The main stage will also see performances from local bands Avatar, Television Room, The Church, Chucklehead and Murphy's Live 2008 winners, Gorbachov.

The Rula Bula Tent will offer the very best local and international DJs and dance acts. Headlined by DJ and producer extraordinaire Andrew Weatherall, the stage will also feature Cork's finest, Fish Go Deep, and Scribble/Bodytonic scratch maestro DJ Kormac, as well as local DJ's Colm Kenfenick, Richie Allen and Ollie Brook.

Jape and an apple. We're assured he stands up for performances.

For the first time, Cork X Southwest hosts an acoustic offering, De Barra's Sitting Room Sessions, which will see performances by John Spillane, Roesy, Preston Reed, Juno Falls, Thomas Truax, Tadgh Cooke, Armoured Bear, St. Bourbon and Gavin Moore hosted by the world famous Clonakilty venue.

In keeping with the West Cork vibe, Cork X Southwest will use local producers providing delicious organic festival treats, cooked in the slow food ethic. Local artists and sculptors, including the Skibbereen Working Artists Studio, will contribute to the ambience of the festival site.

A new addition to the festival, The R 'n' R tent, will be a refuge from the hustle and bustle of the festival, hosting a variety of quirky events. Don't have the time to travel around the emerald isle?

Check out A Long Drive Around Ireland and save yourself the trip! Play Sensible Soccer with your mates for free - it's the greatest game in the world - or if that doesn't suffice give Ringo a try, guess the intros to songs within 30 seconds and be crowded the king of music bingo for music nerds.

Stuck for green space in your urban retreat? Check out Malcolm Rutherford's lecture on 'Growing A Garden in Your Flat' and turn your indoors into outdoors.

In addition to the above, festival-goers can immerse themselves in the wonderful world of Thomas Truax - an instrument inventor from New York, the Cork Music Photography Slideshow, and a seminar on bikes from the Cork Bike Community Movement. The No Frontiers Dance Company will present BMX Ballet, a choreographed dance extravaganza featuring bicycles, bmx, skateboards, wheelchairs, rollerblades and unicycles.

The Cinemobile will also be on site, screening music documentaries including The Adventures Of Flannery, the story of Cork-born singer, songwriter and enfant terrible Cathal Coughlan and Shellshock Rock, a documentary on Belfast's punk-rock scene in the late 1970's. Other musical choices include The Irishmen: An Impression of Exile (1965), Freedom Highway and Dambe: The Mali Project (2008).

Preston Reed

Friday July 25 will also see the addition of a Festival Fringe, to kick start the weekend. Some of Skibbereen's finest hostelries will host live performances from the cream of up and coming Irish bands such as Stanley Super 800 (performing their popular country set), Moebius, Ian Whitty and The Exchange, The Civilians, Setmaker and the Ceili All Stars.

Hosted in the picturesque Showground's on the outskirts of Skibbereen, Murphy's Live presents Cork X Southwest is a thriving new one day event that brings together a veritable feast for the senses - music, food, art and quirky sideshows, presented in a friendly, informal, relaxed atmosphere. Following the huge success of this year's Murphy's Live, Ireland's biggest band competiton, Murphy's are delighted to announce their continuing support of quality live music in presenting this year's Cork X Southwest festival, helping it to grow in both size and variety.
