Alternative Miss Cork 2008

The Alternative Miss Cork 2008

Savoy Theatre, Sunday 24th February 2008

Once a year the Alternative Miss Cork show rolls into town, bringing a fantastic variety of contestants for the whole of Cork to behold at an action packed evening full of hilarious entertainment. The winner of the pageant will represent Cork at the annual Alternative Miss Ireland in Dublin's Olympia Theatre in March. The events are a fun means of raising funds for charities who help the many HIV positive people in Ireland. Last year over 5000 Euro was raised.

This years event is happening in the Savoy Theatre on Patrick street, on Sunday the 24th of February 2008.

If you have not been to an Alternative Miss Cork Show let us explain – The Alternative Miss Cork is hosted annually by the one and only Panti, considered by many as the grande dame of the Dublin scene and the most influential of all Irish drag queens. Panti is a critically acclaimed entertainer and gels the show together with exceptional style and finesse, encouraging each contestant to perform to their absolute best.

Contestants must be special and their allure must be of a rarer sort. The event is judged by a panel of experienced and renowned celebrity judges who are looking for a very specific set of characteristics to award the Alternative Miss Cork crown. The characteristic valued is originality, but also our 'queen' must be overflowing with charisma and be an all-round entertainer to win over both the celebrity judges and the crowd, during three stages.

The first stage is Swim Wear– here the contestants parade in their own take of the 'swim costume' and chat with the host Panti. This is followed by Day Wear and Evening Wear, where the contestants get to perform their 'party piece', which can be anything, once it's entertaining. Contestants use their own music for each of the stages and it must reflect their concept and enhance their character.

Previous winners have been:

Fabula de Beaumarchais (drag queen), The Zimbabwean Rose (Irish-Zimbabwean performance artist), Virgin Atlantica (actress/comedienne), Sheila Fitzpatrick (Limerick's finest, Irish dancing, drag queen), Lucy Furr (South African drag queen) and our reigning queen, Kitty Cartier who is a renowned drag queen from the London cabaret circuit and has since gone on to perform at many theatre productions in Cork and had her own show at the Spiegeltent.

During the interval we have performances from past winners and other local talents.

The Alternative Miss Cork team all work for free and all profits from the event are donated to HIV and AIDS charities, in the past we have given donations to the Cork AIDS Alliance, The Rotary "Give Back A Smile Campaign" helping children with AIDS in Africa and The Southern Gay Men's Health Project. All are very worthy charities, doing a fantastic job to help prevent the spread of HIV and help people manage and deal with their illness.

So come on down and join the party and help a great cause. It's a show not to be missed, we assure you!!
