How do you know that the battery lasts only a year when it has only been out two months?

He's not quite right, but in some ways he is.

Lithium-Ion batteries have an average lifespan of about two years, dependent on a wide range of factors (temperature, load etc...). It's quite unlikely that they've managed to extent that lifetime much considering nobody else has.

Also, they tend to lose about 20% of capacity annually regardless of how much they're used.

That two year lifespan is the time from manufacture, not of first use, so if you buy an iPhone, because the battery is actually integrated into the cover, it might be significantly older than a battery you get in a normal phone in the box, up to a month, which is important if they only last 2 years, on average.

BTW, there's nothing sinister in this, it is currently just about impossible to make a similar battery that lasts longer than that.

dont see the appeal of the ipod touch at all..
widescreen for video content... but only 8 / 16 gigs to store them on ?

3.5 inch screen. Its flash based also which is less likely to fail.
I like the look of the the touch interface. Internet browser.
At the moment 16GB is perfect for me. 80gb is too big for such a small screen.
