Nope - anyone with a legal copy of 7 or 8 can upgrade for free for 12 months.

Then they plan on charging? Sneaky!

Slightly ambiguous.

Are you planning on installing, spank??

Edit: I've just did a bit of searching and if you have certain versions of 7 and 8 you are eligible for a free upgrade without ever having to pay (even after 12 months). Eg: premium and professional.

Can someone confirm this?

Frank?

Yep, that's my understanding too, they're not moving to a subscription-based model.

There'd be uproar if they did.

They're giving this away for free for three main reasons:
1. They know the future is about the app ecosystem, Win 10's universal apps are basically the future of the company. While it is a bit of marketing hype (right now, definitely not simply write once, run anywhere), if they can get traction, it'll make a huge difference to Windows Phone and their tablet offering.
It's also something Android and iOS don't come close to offering. With the amount of legacy software on Windows, they have the potential to leapfrog both, the idea being anything that can currently be run on a PC will run on a tablet or mobile. Practice is very different but even closing half that gap gives a huge advantage. So getting this out there will help them sell stuff through app stores and get them as the default choice for enterprise IT.
2. Windows has fragmented fairly badly, XP still has a 14% market share, Windows 7 has 57%, Windows 8 has 3.5%, Windows 8.1 has 13%. Even the car crash that was Vista has a 2% market share.

The only realistic challenger is OSX, which is pretty unified around the latest version.

That mess needs to be cleaned up, especially on the consumer side. It's leaving security holes, support costs and a nightmare for software developers. XP support ended last year and it still is the second biggest OS out there. That's nuts.

3. It doesn't hurt promoting this. MS are still working on reforming their image and being seen to give this away for free helps a lot.

You're reading that wrong Jimmy - if you upgrade within 12 months it will be free. If you wait longer than 12 months to upgrade then it will be chargeable.

Fair enough really, they clearly want everyone off 7/8 and onto the new platform as quickly as possible.

Yeah, I'd say if they factor in the cost-saving of stopping development on 7/8 as compared to the money they get from upgrades, it works out better for them.

Manufacturers will still have to pay OEM licences anyway, and thats where I imagine they make most of their money from anyway.

Interesting stuff. Can't believe there is such little difference in market share between vista and win 8. 8 has clearly been a complete fuck up for Microsoft.

Speed-wise or feature-wise?

Or what-wise?

Talk now spankey_Y.

I received a new icon on the task bar informing me that I am one of the chosen ones to be able to download Windows 10 for free.

I’m pretty satisfied with Windows 7 on that machine as I mostly use it for INTERNETTING, watching the news and the usual porn scene.

What would I get from windows 10?

Also, I have Windows 7 Professional – which Windows 10 would they be giving me?

I refuse to be cast in the “Home” version scene with the mongs.
