Which is surprising because I think HP outsell Sony. Possibly not in the laptop field though.

HP sell more computers than Dell I think I read somewhere.

I know two other guys working with me who had their hard drives replaced and half a dozen more who have had to get their motherboards replaced. The D600 series is riddled with inate design problems.

After that sort of experience, forgive me for being a bit reserved about getting one.
I've seen these reports on dell, but going on personal exp. I have a 5 year old dell thats still going apart from battery not charging (which is to be expected) and never had a days trouble with it. Of the 3 HPs we lodt in last job, replaced with dells and had no trouble with them either. But i have seen the web reports.. But I suppose no one posts on a forum the say their PC's working fine!

HPs wouldn't use as doorstops, of the 3 I mentioned 2 motherboards died, the other laptop overheating, cdr died, nic died..

For which I'd have to fork out a further £100.

Of course, you fill it with cold water. I can't stress that enough.
Rubber is a pretty good insulator, wouldn't want that near my vents...

Noting that I should really have used the multi quote thingy, desktop computers are much, much more reliable than laptops and I'd venture that dell sell more laptops but HP sell more desktops if that's true.

Thanks for that Mango, but look at the specs! It's got a DVB-T tuner and all.

Nice idea. This thing is riddled with vents. I've taken my DVD drive out to help with dissipation. It works, relatively decently...

Not really, not if I buy the computer now, it's pretty much bundled right in there.

And I know they're not going to come up with another "upgrade" next year costing me yet another £100.

They haven't really (ok, they have but not that you'd notice) released a new operating system for home owners since they first released XP...

If you want Vista and don't want to buy a new PC then you "have to fork out" for it too.

If you buy a mac from mid oct on then 10.5 will be bundled with that too.

You are being very selective in the points you are making.
