How old are those photos? Isnt there a convenience store in the first one for the last couple of months and a health store place in the second one?

Default Gone

That would be a very big two shops wide Health Store!
No matter though. My overall point is that removal of car access to the City is killing commerce there. Russells is gone. O Callaghan's is gone. How long were these characterful proper shops there. Oliver Plunkett Street is gradually being transformed into a trash place with only Pound Shops and ridiculously prices so called convenience stores. Fly by night stuff.
One other thing you might notice in the photos, which is the reason Billy takes them, is the absolute absence of FootFallers.

Eh...both of those "empty" units you showed are actually occupied and have been for some time. You are literally, as the Trump would say, fake news.

Out of curiosity how many pound shops and convenience stores are there on OP Street? Seeing as how you said "...with only pound shops and ridiculously prices so called convenience stores" - there must by a couple dozen of each surely??

Oliver Plunket Street, Cork Wins ‘Best Street’ from the Academy of Urbanism
Published: Monday, November 09, 2015

Steven Bee, chair of the Academy, said: “This is proof that a secondary shopping street does not have to be second-rate. Many of its traditional small shops survived because they were close the city centre shops that draw lots of people to Cork. This is now proving attractive to new shops, restaurants and other businesses for whom the tight layout and small properties are affordable and attractive. Improvements to the public realm are attracting more people and more investment.”

Default Taking The Piss

“We sometimes have to search for the DNA of a street, but Oliver Plunkett Street exudes it - it’s a vibrant living street and community, full of little surprises,”
There is no community on Oliver Plunkett Street.
Indeed plenty of surprises at 3 AM, mostly lavatorial, young wans pissing the in phone box outside the OP. Others pissing in the dark side lanes. Fighting.
There seems to be a cluster of City Hall supporters here.
Given the Flood Walls debacle, the failed first attempt at Panaban, the 4.7 Million pa in compensation due to the slippery paving slab, this is surprising. It seems more likely that you guys are serial objectors. Bickering over details while ignoring the substantive issue. I doubt that any of you actually believe a word you say, nor do you support City Halls daft policies.

Those shops were shut down at the time of the photo, but not now, kinda misses the point. Two very large shops were closed simultaneously on our Main Street. Similarly Russells and O Callaghan's are gone. Irrespective of City Hall's desperate lying, our City Centre is blatantly empty during prime afternoon shopping hours.

STOP
Get a grip on City Hall. There is a bullying arrogant ethos there. Ann Doherty insists on going ahead with the Flood Walls, as soon as she can buy her way past the Legal Obstacles. Panaban failed so now they are throwing money at it. Front page stories in the Examiner featuring two Developers supporting CH. Free Parking, at taxpayers expense. Free Events, at taxpayers expense, on Patricks Street, which nobody is attending.
Remove Free Parking Rights for City Council employees. Have them pay like everyone else.
Remove unilateral powers from Fire Officers, particularly the guy who shut The Lobby.
Lose Panaban and OllieBan.

START
Reinstate on-Street Parking. Given the phone payment and such, it should be possible to do better on Disabled Parking. How about making it possible to Book a space and time, anywhere there is the technology, right next to destination, rather than keeping tens of permanently available spaces empty? There must be a better way.
There are big areas of on street parking replaced by Coke Bike Parking. These and all Bike parking should be relocated to the vast areas of pavement.
Tidal Wall. Repair and clean the sides of the River. Stop paving with slippery stones. Remove the blatantly idiotic contra flow cycle lanes and the dangerous lines of brick used to enforce them.
Cut Rates for buildings used as Venues for Live Music with additional help for those promoting Original. Ditto other Arts. There is a vast amount of empty space above ground floor in the City Centre. This is again a Fire/Insurance thing, with listed buildings not allowed external or deployable Fire Escapes. Other Cities have found solutions.

Vast infrastructure on Patrick Street yesterday afternoon. People in their Tens of Thousands stayed away.

Good idea, given the recent Summer let's adopt Spanish practices, Siesta, close the shops for the afternoon.

Yet another desperate attempt to validate Panaban. https://www.irishexaminer.com/breaki...Qiehhaj6rIeHT8
