Har har har.

Short of the Smegmeister (ew) offering to sell me something fiendishly interesting from his own stock I think I'll be going with HBB's recommendation. A mac would be groovy, I'll admit, but they're obnoxiously priced.

I'll PM Smegatron now and wait until Monday to order so he has a chance to get back to me. Thanks all!

I do not know, though, not having used it.

Any recommendations from the tech squad for a nice mid-level, dependable model? Linux won't do, unfortunately, and while a Mac would be great I find them ridiculously overpriced new.

Any suggestions for where to start looking, once I know what I ought to be aiming for?

It's for work, I won't be playing games or any such shite on it. It will probably be used for a langerload of films though.
If you are on Meteor, look up their goodies on their website, a few deals available on laptops

Smeggle tends to do some good deals and conveniently located in the back square in Macroom. Which is nice.
Say hi to the locals from me. used to live round the corner.

Or if the internet be your destination, this would be my recommendation:
http://www.laptopsdirect.ie/Asus_X40...8V/version.asp

Weighs less than 2KG (Macbook Pro is roughly the same weight, some lighter, some heavier), looks pretty good, enough processing power and RAM for your needs and a spacious 750GB harddrive.

And all for €100 less than your budget.
I think this has made the grade. Tanks, Fwank.

I got a 1 TB HP laptop in PC World, 6gb RAM, last week reduced from €760 to €500.

Oh you did, did you?

This might be a game changer. Send me on the details there.

Hurry though, I'm ordering something later on.
