8 is for kids it looks like some class of i phone. What are Microsoft up to. They should have learned from the dreaded vista. Nothing wrong with win 7 so i am sticking to that

Some anorak was on "Talk to Joe" yesterday complaining that you can't buy the windows tablet (with windows 8 on it) in Ireland.

Pwned.

It's bollocks. Utter..

But watching the presentations from Build this week, some of it is starting to make sense. It really is a long term strategy from Microsoft here but currently, it's bollocks.

If the object of the exercise is exercise is to force people to learn keyboard shortcuts then it is a great success. Having used it for a couple of days I find that's the best way to get around. It's nice and zippy in fairness.

It's an intermediate release. They've nailed two user interfaces together on top of an old operating system.

The next release should be closer to a thin client web based OS than the traditional Windows 7.

Agreed, as was Vista but it would be nice if their marketing department could for once admit to this.

To be fair to them, they are trying something that is genuinely ambitious. Nobody yet has properly tried to unify the desktop, tablet and phone, iOS and OSX are still miles apart, stitched together in a slightly haphazard fashion by iCloud (for now).

I mean, it's an obvious move, but it's even more ambitious when you add in the XBOX integration too. So I wouldn't blame the microsoft marketing department to going a little crazy on it, actually getting something stable that manages that level of cross-platform integration*, even if it is somewhat of a bodge, is an achievement in and of itself.

Of course, it's not as slick as the Apple offering from a pure UI point of view, which loses them serious points in front of customers, but as an engineer, I can appreciate just how big a deal this is.

*yes, I've officially been in management too long

Hmmmm, I dunno. They have a unified kernel and a unified runtime (WinRT) but that's about it. You could argue, almost correctly, that Apple have done the same with Darwin and parts of Cocoa.
