Everyone knows the situation there is fucked up as a result of loads of historical injustices, but that doesn't alter the present state of play. A minority in the north would support merging with the RoI right now; but if this became a small majority it would still be the case that a lot of British nationalists would be facing absorption into a country they see as foreign and hostile. There is no point pretending that, by appealing to the principle of majority rule, this million-or-so people would reconcile themselves to the notion.

How to proceed under such circumstances? A federal approach, which would possibly have NI as an autonomous zone within an expanded RoI (such that northern Irish nationalists would have the security of knowing there is a larger entity which will ensure they are not victimised or persecuted); and that expanded RoI being part of a (voluntary) federation with Scotland, England and Wales (such that northern British nationalists would have the security of knowing there is a larger entity which will ensure they are not victimised or persecuted)?

But suggest that and you are suddenly a west Brit unionist monarch-loving shoneen.

So you want a federation with the other island but not a united Ireland on its own? That's your view - you're entitled to it.

Does thinking about forcing a million unionists into the republic arouse you at all?

I think you are missing the point. The federal proposal provides comfort and security to both communities in NI. A united Ireland does not.

No because I don't want to do that. No one is doing that. Except the majority of people in the north if and when that ever happens and with considerably more accommodation and agreement than was afforded nationalists.

You pierce it with a toothpick at each ocular pole. Adjust accordingly.

In other words, if a million unionists are outvoted by a million and one nationalists, force them in.

That's sure to work out swimmingly.

Now where's my bulletproof vest again...
