Don't knock it till you've tried it.

Robots can be surprisingly tender lovers.

so how does it compare against something simliar?

that is what i am asking, as it seems that the "anti-macs" know a bit more about computing than me.

i would imagine that it compares pretty well.

We got everything from the big bang theory really.

Thicker by 0.7 of a centimetre, slightly slower processor and uses a spinning hard drive instead of solid state drive in the Air, but the air is double the price.

Actually, if you compare it against the 13.3" model with 256GB SSD (as opposed to the Asus's 320GB drive), it's 2.5 times the price.

And Asus have at least as good a reliability record as Apple, they come out ahead in a number of surveys.

Setting up a Dell with almost exactly the same specs as the 128GB SSD 13 inch model (0.2cm thicker and the same processor as the 11 inch model) will set you back £100 less.

good work on that googling.

the acer actually looks quite good. and is similar macbook air

the asus - although looking quite good.

would probably be better compared to the mac book 13", which although being nearly double the price, has a much faster processor - in fact a whopping 1.1 ghz more - and a supposed 10 hour battery life.

and if you shop around you will actually get that macbook for a good bit less than the 999 advertised on the apple site.

No, you can't. The only place in Ireland you can get it cheaper is at an airport.
Apple exercise very, very tight control on their pricing. Resellers are never allowed to set their own prices. In the UK, the only better deals you can get on Apple gear is 2 years free warranty (not applecare) with John Lewis, which is on all laptops as standard and with the VAT taken off at Dixons in most of the BAA airports.

Shopping around for new Apple kit is pointless, unless you go abroad.

The Macbook Pro might have a faster processor, but it is also half a kilo heavier and has a smaller harddrive.

And is twice the price.

A more comparable laptop from Asus would be this one:
http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/ASUS_...n.asp?PID=1470

Almost the same specs as the Macbook Pro, but £350 cheaper.

I was actually thinking about getting a Macbook Pro this week and I was challenging people to come up with something that could beat it substantially, price-wise.

I think I've just found the answer to my own question...
