Cork man jailed for manslaughter of pensioner

A 26-year-old Corkman has been jailed for eleven and a half years after he was found guilty of the manslaughter of a pensioner. 74-year old Margaret Murphy died during a burglary at her home at Barrett's Buildings in Cork. Today Judge AG Murphy said that John Arundel from Baker's Road, Gurranebraher, had shown no remorse.
Margaret Murphy was a well-known newspaper vendor who lived among a mainly elderly community at Barrett's Buildings on Cork's northside. On August 1, 1997, her house was burgled. Margaret Murphy was bound above the knees with wire flex. She had a weak heart and died following a heart attack induced by the stress of being tied up. Just £320 was taken in the burglary.
John Arundel denied the charge of manslaughter. But the jury convicted him after Gardaí gave evidence that his fingerprint was found on the cover of a video box and on a window frame at Margaret Murphy's home. Arundel had said that he was never at the house.
Sentencing Arundel this afternoon, Judge AG Murphy described him as a professional criminal and said that the attack on Ms Murphy was a cowardly crime. John Arundel is the second person to be convicted of Margaret Murphy's manslaughter. Earlier this year 24-year old Declan Meehan, also from Gurranebraher, changed his plea to guilty six days into his trial. Meehan was jailed for eight years.

Corkman jailed for 8 years for manslaughter of elderly woman

A man who pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of a 73-year-old woman during a burglary at her home has been sentenced to eight years in jail. Twenty-four-year-old Declan Meehan from Saint Declan's Road, Gurranebraher in Cork was also sentenced to five years for burglary.
Margaret Murphy lived most of her life at 66 Barrett's Buildings among a community of mainly elderly residents, on the northside of Cork's inner city. On August 1, 1997, Margaret Murphy's house was burgled by Declan Meehan and an accomplice. Margaret Murphy was tied up and died from stress even before the burglars had left her house.
Declan Meehan pleaded guilty to burglary and yesterday, six days into the trial, changed his plea to guilty of manslaughter too. Mr Meehan has over two dozen previous convictions dating back to his early teenage years. Just £320 was taken in the burglary that cost Margaret Murphy her life. Today the court heard from Detective Garda Denis O'Shea that the death of this quiet, elderly woman had had a traumatic effect on her neighbours.

Judge Patrick Moran described
this as a most appalling case and sentenced Meehan to eight years in jail for manslaughter and five for burglary. Judge Moran also discharged the jury in the trial of Meehan's co-accused,
John Arundel, who pleaded not guilty to the same charges.
