world class xi

Having read what xvis said in the liverpool thread about there only being 11 world class players in the world at a time*, one in each position, maybe we should pick our world class xi team.

*I tend to agree with him but also with Eb that the game is bereft of true world class players.

Let's try and reach something of a consensus in each position here,

Goalkeeper = Gianluigi Buffon?

what say you?

Iker Casillas

Iker Casillas

There's no doubt that Casillas is a top keeper. But he reminds me of Shay Given. Great when the shots are raining in on him, but if he is relatively untroubled during a game, he switches off and is prone to letting one in that he should save. i'd pit him in the top 5.

Buffon and Casillas are both streets ahead, don't think I could pick one over the other. Don't know about Casillas, but Buffon isn't a great penalty stopper- on the other hand, Buffon is a master of organising a defence, and let's face it, having the level of respect that allows him to bark orders at the defensive legends he's worked with has to count for more than shouting at chumps Casillas works with.

I'll edge for Buffon... just.
