This view that the left hates Shatter is weird to me.
I knew staff of ministers from the time of that coalition and he was viewed as almost a Labour minister, at times, by many.
He was, apparently, a massive dissenting voice against some of FGs more draconian ideas

Without being economically suicidal as PBP, and definitely very pro increase in defense spending (particularly navy/air/cyber) I would be further left than many Labour supporters and other than his, seemingly, blind support of Israel Shatter is better than most FG.
His biggest failing, to me, was around Callinan but why would "the left" hate him?

It's probably mainly to do with Israel but a lot of the Left have a negative view of Jews as financiers and as first-class intellectuals. Gannon and Gibney are very much laggards to Shatter on the latter. Shatter was an easy scapegoat for Enda Kenny at the time of the McCabe affair. That he was aiming to reform the legal profession also meant FG were glad to see the back of him.

I like Gary Gannon. He is good for the city. His policies are also good that of those of the Social Democrats, mind you I used to like Alan Shatter too but the whole Zionism support turns me off him but he was a reforming minister. When I was younger my family brought me to the Zoo and we met him there. Don't remember him but he was the first Minister I ever saw.

How clueless is Gannon? As a TD he could have said all he wanted about Shatter under Dáil privilege. Soc Dems are junior B level politicians. The Greens and Labour for all their faults are light-years ahead of these clowns on every level.

Irish Labour were never traditionally left wing in the way their Euroean counterparts were. Essentially it is the party of the Public sector unions and any policy or strategy proposed by government is always viewed by Labour through the viewpoint of "will it affect public sector workers". Shaft the poor and oppressed by all means but don't make changes to public secor flexi-time arrangements or other entitlements!!
