Ah here, too revisionist to ignore the role the church played in our education here. The church really only went to the dark place it went after independence when the two main parties (most especially FF) saw allying with them as a way of cementing power.A tad ironic that the church are getting all the praise for educating the masses I think.
While they were happy to provide primary education, the provision of free post-primary education to the masses from the late 1960s was seen as a major factor in the relative demise of the church and its vice-like grip on the hearts and minds of the masses. Little wonder that the bishops were against its introduction.
We’d a PP in the hill years ago said how he was now down to a key to his house, his car and the church itself contrasting it with long ago when they’d have had keys to everything. It was a good example and he said what it had become was so much better.
I feel sorry for the many, many good priests that had their whole life’s vocation twisted wherein day to day they must ultimately have experienced people being wary of leaving their kids talk to them. Imagine like.
