Going by population alone, Cork are chronically bad at football.

Well thats a stupid thing to just go on.
Very little football in East Cork where most of the population is.

The GAA sports are driven by plopulation, be it parish, town or county.
Sports like Rugby and Soccer are not.
The provinces and club teams can get players from outside their boundaries, outside the country even. Soccer the same, Shamrock Rovers and Bohemians are not parochial bound.
The populations of Mayo , Louth and Kerry combined are less than Cork.

I'm not an expert on plopulation but I do know that most of the plopulation is not in East Cork.

West Cork aka the heart of football is the least plopulated part of county Cork.
Its not as simple as looking at county plopuation statistics.
Kerry has a plopulation of 160,000 but even in the hurling areas they produce footballers like Galvin.
There hasnt been too many Cork hurlers come out of west of Bandon and vice versa footballers east of Glanmire.

Bit harsh on Cork. Size and population may appear to advantage Cork but the opposite is true, particularly in football.
To even things up it'd be fair to redraw the county boundary to give a chunk of kerry to Cork. Or allow Cork to draw one or two players from outside the county.

No doubt we have underperformed largely due to large chunks of our population not giving a damn about GAA and an inept county board that believed for years that titles and clubs and schools didnt have to be worked on but would spring from the ground like mushrooms.

However that being said, other counties with a population similar to Kerry and generally one focus have definitely underperformed. Mayo has one sport. Very little rugby, soccer, hurling, rowing etc in Mayo.
Probably as much as there is in Kerry.
Mayo have 3 titles, Kerry have 39.
In fact every county outside Ulster bar the big 2 has underperformed since the turn of the century.

We haven’t reached an all Ireland football semi final since 2013, a final since 2010c we haven’t operated in division 1 until this year after 10 years
Outside it, considering counties with far smaller populations such as Roscommon, Monaghan, Donegal have all routinely operated at that level and while our underage achievements over the same time hasn’t been great, compared to Armagh or Monaghan or Donegal it’s quite
Good and still our efforts at senior football all over the last 12 years or so has been abysmal, even now the progression has been glacial.
Hurling, no explanation needed, a minority sport with about 4/6 teams competitive at max and no all Ireland since 2005…….hammerings in 2 of our last 3 all Ireland finals with a pyschological hangover that would put the Red Sox or mayo to shame……honest appraisal corks senior performances this century have been awful especially compared to counties who used to be rivals but have surpassed us Kilkenny, Tipperary, Kerry, Dublin etc never mind Tyrone, limerick, Tyrone

Mayo have beaten Monaghan, Meath, Cork and Louth to get to a final.
All Either div 2 this year or next.

Kerry have beaten Kildare, Armagh, Tyrone and Dublin.
1 team in next year’s division 1.

This might be more open than we reckon.
