A fella I work with is from Ballinspittle.
I asked him what he had done for the weekend maybe 8 or 9 years ago.
He said that some neighbour of his had died and he spend the Sunday night digging the grave with shovels and picks along with 4 or 5 others.
I couldn't believe it. He reckoned it was still a thing in the more rural parishes, but getting more scarce.
Fuckin mad stuff. 6 feet is a lot if digging, no mind the risk of collapse.
I think there is a sign in Schull graveyard discouraging the act but is it still a thing?
I doubt it's legal like.
