Who else here misses 'a good funeral'?

A fella I work with is from Ballinspittle.

I asked him what he had done for the weekend maybe 8 or 9 years ago.

He said that some neighbour of his had died and he spend the Sunday night digging the grave with shovels and picks along with 4 or 5 others.

I couldn't believe it. He reckoned it was still a thing in the more rural parishes, but getting more scarce.

Fuckin mad stuff. 6 feet is a lot if digging, no mind the risk of collapse.

I think there is a sign in Schull graveyard discouraging the act but is it still a thing?

I doubt it's legal like.

That's an amazing story.

Especially considering that it's the undertaker and not the priest who would arrange transport from the church to the burial/crematorium.

Also amazing that the family of the deceased person, who organised the crematorium, didn't at any point stop the coffin being taken to the graveyard.

Yup, that's a pretty unbelievable story alright....
Fedmitty Inventino ?

Where I am from there would be people in the community who would (or certainly would have in the past) stepped in as gravediggers when needed. They wouldn't be doing it only for friends, but for anyone in the community and as a point of principle they wouldn't take payment for it.

I think since the county council have taken over more graveyards it has become a more organised affair.

I "attended" a buddy's cremation in Scotland via live stream a few months ago.
You could order a commemorative book and a video file or dvd of the service, so you can watch it whenever you like.
I guess it's of solace to some, but what an odd keepsake.

It’s more common than you think, especially post covid

My mother passed away in July and we were asked if we’d like a video of the cremation service
We declined as we thought it was a bit unusual but remembered her brother (my uncle) in America would have liked it. We did regret it a lot but in the end we took lots of videos and pics of the internment of her ashes and scattering in a beauty spot and he was so grateful.

Did it a few times back in the late 80s early 90s but you wouldn't be allowed do it nowadays in cemeteries as its all health and safety and I haven't heard or seen it being done in last 25 yrs at least .

I have seen the filling of a grave at 2 funerals within last 15yrs but the gravedigger would also be present and watching for safety of guys doing it ..
