The vast majority of Cork City dwellers were protestant of settler origin right up to the 19th century. The famine changed that.
If you dont have protestant roots you're a blow in to the city.
I take it you're a prod Kingy. That would explain a lot.....

Not a sniff of a one. Catholic all the way back on both sides with out even a trace of a Norman or English name back as far as we can go on the family trees. Both grandparents from Cork city but if you go back far enough their origins are rural like all Catholics.
My mothers family had land originally but like I said in the other thread that was acquired through trade. My father's family were dirt poor.

Both my grandfathers were orphaned. My paternal grandfather was the child of a local wealthy businessman in Waterford and one of the house maids and my maternal grandfather was the child of an American naval officer in cobh during WW1 and a young girl from cobh. Both grew up by the grace of others. My paternal grandmother was from Barracks Street and my maternal grandmother was from Blackpool. Life was difficult for that generation but they survived and raised families of their own. I grew up in Ballyvolane, lived briefly in Glanmire and then moved to the States 35 years ago. I still miss Cork but life is good.
