Finished "There us is no Antimemetics Division" by Qntm

Qntm is a software developer from the UK called Sam Hughes. This was originally one of those FanFic role-playing jobs on the Web where nerds write essays to each other.



It's a Sci-Fi horror job about a kind of x-files set up wan who's job is to investigate strange phenomenon that attacks memories (Anti-memes).

The set up is fantastic really clever (ive done it no justice above) and imaginative the first half of the book flies along brilliantly..It gets a bit lost in his own inception style cleverness but it's a tidy little distraction of a book and good craic. it's a quick running 275 pages with no spoon feeding involved.

Updike was a fierce prolific writer – but an awful lot of his novels are repeated treatments of adultery in the protestant / academic middle class in New England. Reading one or two is grand, but they tend to merge and repeat a bit after that. The outstanding Rabbit tetralogy is excepted of course – that quartet of reads alone would have guaranteed Updike immortality – not just for Harry Angstrom, but the whole backdrop of the transition of life in Brewer, Penn from the 60s to the 90s.
TBH, I wasn’t sure about this one – in case it would be another shifty infidelity tome – and there is a fair bit of that – but the whole is a whole lot more, intertwining Updike’s lifelong interest in James Buchanan with yet another personal journey though marital breakup. He builds a compelling picture of Art, the main protagonist, negotiating his way through early middle age while alternating with long sections of Art’s never-to-be-finished magnum opus on Buchanan.

Recommended.
