"The things we never say"- Elizabeth Strout.

Only half way though. So far it is classic Strout. Good sharp writing and little room for sentiment!

Loved Olive Kittridge when I read I a good while back.

Started Stephen King's 11.22.63 a month or so ago, got distracted when I found Daniel Friebe's superb biography of Jan Ullrich (tore through that in a week), so back with King again. I really liked it when I started but I think it lags too much from descriptive prose (which is excellent tbf). I'll see it out now.

Both good books, Time's Arrow is the better I think, but it is awhile since I read them.

Just finished ' Said the Dead by Doireann Ni Griofa as recommended by Matlock.

Took me awhile to really get into it as there was a bit of blurring between fact and imagination going on , a very unusual format as is the authors way, but a beautifully written book and such an interesting account of Cork History. Loved it once I tuned in to O Griofas writing style.

It led me to look into other stuff online re Our Lady's Hospital and St. Kevins. A few video documentaries available and one where a couple of young fellas simply walk around it with a camera. Eerie place for sure and having read the book I can just imagine Doireann O Griofa wanting to give the female patients who were kept there a voice.

Excellent book I would highly recommended.

Just finished "Nonesuch" by Francis Spufford

Magical thriller job set during the blitz in London. The heroine is a proto feminist who enjoys money (the acquisition of) and sex gets wrapped up in a plot by the British Union of Fascists to travel back in time using magic and make it so the Brits throw their lot In with the Nazis.

Good craic. The setting is the best bit. Blitz era London is well invoked and Iris the main character is flawed and likable and you root for her all along.

There is a heavy Romantic subtext to this which I found a bit heavy handed but will drive up sales by a few million I'm sure.

He didn't quite stick the landing on all the big reveals Character motivations get a bit muddled.

It's good fun, time travel has some serious consequences. Some of them may be sexy consequences too.
