I really need to read again, I spent half my life stuck in a book. I'm guessing it will come eventually
I think the concentration is required is a bit like a muscle and you need to exercise it.

My advice on this is read short books till you're back up to speed.

Use the library and you'll save a fortune, their App is pretty good and you can order almost everything if you're willing to wait a few weeks.

and don't be afraid to ditch a book if it's shite. These things are primarily entertainment. if it's not entertaining on some way its not good

I used to read a good bit before my kids were born but between lack of sleep and lack of time it fell by the wayside. Whenever I did find time, I'd be asleep after a page.
Audiobooks were a game changer.
I drive a lot with work so I get through a good few books now by listening to them.
Gone big into John Grisham recently, just finished A Time To Kill, outstanding.

"Said the Dead"- Doireann Ní Ghríofa.

An absolutely extraordinary read. It's very lyrical, at times like a mixture between poetry and prose. Very similar style to her last book "A ghost in the throat". It is a style of writing that I expect people will either love or hate. I loved it!

It covers the story of a doctor in the Lee Road mental hospital, Dr Lucia Strangman, and the stories of some of her patients, including Muriel MacSwiney (wife of Terence MacSwiney).

Best book I have read so far this year.

I did a bit of security work in there 30 odd years ago. The lower hospital which was populated at the time and some nights on the one right at the top of the hill which wasn't.

Boss showed me around it, and it was like it was abandoned, with some of the beds half made and some fully dressed. Bedside lockers with bits and bobs in them. Televisions in wards etc etc There was a front office with a TV, a kettle and a toilet right next door.

I was supposed to walk around it every few hours or so and turn on and off lights to make it look occupied.

I was always fierce tired those nights though and wasn't able to.

Strange.

Sounds good. Read Ghost in the Throat and really liked it too. So definitely my next read.

Did you have a kip in one of the dressed beds instead? Lol
