Based on your two consecutive good reviews, I've splashed out on these novels C.Just finished the 5th and last of the Patrick Melrose novels. Really enjoyed them. Might try Julia now, the recent 'feminist' version of 1984........

Forsyth was infamous for his research. when he was writing the dogs of war he almost started a coup in Equatorial Guinea by accident on behalf of the Igbo tribe who he was known to be sympathetic too after his coverage of the Biafran war.
He went at far as meeting arms dealers and getting quotes from mercenary groups.
Absolutely brilliant book. Really enjoyed (if that's the right word) it.![]()

Mrs Markyboy had an uncle who was on the receiving end of Japanese slave labour which he talks about throughout this book. He subsequently died eating an ice-cream in a back garden in Turners Cross. Never recovered the poor man. RIP
