The Godfather of Poker by Doyle Brunson ( and some writer).

Biography of the author who was a professional Poker player from his 20s right up until he died at 89, 2 or 3 years ago. If you like Poker and/or gambling its a decent yarn.

Finished SPQR, A history of Ancient Rome by Mary Beard last week. A book of two halves. First part was very detailed about how we know what we know about Rome and details of how historians found out a lot of the knowledge. In others words zzzzzz. I nearly jacked it in halfway through and was definitely regretting having bought two of her books at once .

The second half, when we got to Julius Ceasar and the subsequent Emporors was excellent and interesting though. Looking forward to Emporor of Rome when I finish the Poker yarn.

Just Finished Sharpe's Eagle by Bernard Cornwell.

I used to love the Sean Bean ITV show so picked up the first one of these a few years ago. This is the 11th one. They're basically all the same. Chick Lit for middle ages men.

Sharpe, is down on his luck and Put upon by
speaking aristocratic prick. But of a March to a new location, bit if a ride off the young wan who came along and needed escorting. Bit if
a fight with with the Frenchies, the irish sargent fella saves him and all is well again. Pip pip.

Basically I'm saying they're claaaaaasss and you can hook it to my veins.

He jumps all over the place from paleontology to astronomy, bacteriology to famous scientists to geology but I like his fact-filled books, like an all kinds of science for dummies book. I find him very readable.

Not really because I am aware of many of the points raised already. I'd recommend it to someone who wants to inform themselves about the topic obvs. Here's a snippet.

Just Finished "Orpheus Nine" by Chris Flynn

The premise is batshit.

It's set in small town rural Australia. A bunch of parents are watching their 9 year olds play a match when all the kids go into a trance. Sing in unison a passage lifted from king Lear in Latin and die instantly from excess salt levels in their bodies, utterly senseless unexplainable deaths and bloody terrifying. "not viral, fungal or bacterial"

It's the best "post covid" novel I've read so far.

It's about how the various parents react with lots of timeshifting to backstories etc.

Small town rural Australia reminds me a lot of small town rural Ireland..

Online reviews on goodreads etc are all over the map. People love it or hate it.

I loved it. Really enjoyed it.

Just finished the 5th and last of the Patrick Melrose novels. Really enjoyed them. Might try Julia now, the recent 'feminist' version of 1984........
