The Brits had handed over the running of the country e.g. schools and health service etc long ago to the RC church as a means of placating and controlling the people.

The attack on the Customs House where about 80 IRA gunmen were captured ( and which was a military disaster for which DeValera was responcible ) went a long way to convincing Collins and other high ranking IRA men that the English couldn't be beaten with their dwindling resources. Late in the day of the War of Independence the English had about 50 thousand soldiers in Ireland compared to our couple of thousand flying column members.
My point is accepting the treaty gave Ireland far more than we ever achieved in our long struggle with England but Collins saw this as a temporary halt in hostilities to enable us to build back up our forces and concentrate the new states powers on liberating the North.
Unfortunately Collins was killed ( rumours about that it was a Kerryman that had made his way across from Kenmare to participate in the gunfight who fired the faithful shot that took General Collins ) however I think Collins motivations and dedication to Irish freedom is without question and he should have been given the opportunity to pursue and continue his aim of Uniting the entire country.
Collins will always be remembered as one of the greatest men we ever had.

If only Jarry and Marty had studied their Irish history at school, then think of how many lives could have been saved from 1969 until 1998 when they came to the same realisation and finally surrendered.
