Employment passes 2.3 million for first time
Numbers grow by 2.4% in third quarter

Employment in the Irish economy has surpassed 2.3 million for the first time.

According to the Central Statistics Office (CSO), the number of people employed here grew by 53,700 (2.4 per cent) to 2.32 million in the third quarter of 2019.

This is around 80,000 higher than the boom time high of 2.23 million recorded in the fourth quarter of 2007 and reflects the current strength of the economy.

However, the CSO cautioned that the State has a bigger population now and a larger workforce than in 2007 and that the employment rate – the proportion of adults with jobs – is still below the pre-crash level.

Nonetheless the figures, contained in the CSO’s latest Labour Force Survey, show that employment in the economy has risen for 29 consecutive quarters since 2013, the official low point of the crash.

The survey showed employment increased in nine of the 14 economic sectors over the year with largest increase (+12.9 per cent +13,000) recorded in the financial, insurance and real estate sector.

The largest decrease was in agriculture, forestry and fishing, which fell by 5.2 per cent or 5,500.

The headline rate of unemployment for the third quarter was put at 4.9 per cent, equating to 128,000 people.

Work for Norries:

A US company recognised as the world's leading producer of essential oils and wellness products is about to open its first major facility outside of America in Cork.

doTerra, based in Utah in the States, is setting up its new manufacturing base just outside Blarney, where it will create over 100 jobs over the next three years.

It's a major boost for the Rebel County amid fears of a post-pandemic recession, and the IDA says the Cork operation will serve as doTerra's European manufacturing headquarters.

The company, which was established in 2008 but now serves and global market, already employs 3,500 people in the US and in sales offices around the world.

The Cork factory will manufacture and distribute doTERRA products to the European marketplace, as well as provide increased capacity to serve other international markets, including the Middle East and Africa.

The 95,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility in Blarney has cleanrooms, bottling rooms, office space, a lab, cold storage and warehousing and is expected to be completed by the end of July.

There are currently 10 employees based in Cork City, and the company will look to add a number of operations roles and warehouse staff in August as the facility ramps up to start production in September.

Just flicking through forums and thought in just 6 months, this particular post hasn't aged all that well.Isn't it amazing how things change change suddenly in the world but more importantly in life.Lots of those jobs are lost now which in turn has changed peoples lives dramatically.

Staggering when you think about it and the sectors badly affected.

This may take some time.
