Tunnel/Dunkettle traffic in morning

I'm not sure its the roads are the issue.

Of course not but road planning needs to allow for the fact that there are idiots out there who let their car run out of fuel or will plough into car in front because they were on Whatapp/tiktok, etc or suddenly swerve into next lane with no indication.

Crazy that road with volume and critical importance of N40 does not have proper hard shoulder where incapacitated vehicles can be moved to in event of breakdown or collision and which allows emergency vehicles, tow trucks to get to and clear scene of crash quickly.

I've found that getting around Belfast is so much easier than Cork, probably because:

- Belfast doesn't have an economy, to speak of.
- Belfast has trains
- They built a motorway through the city center, which prioritised cars over quality of life in Belfast.
- Cork really needs a north ring road, it could be a game changer for the city, and the growth of the city.

For the westbound crashes (which are the vast majority) it is due to the increase in rates that cars are getting through the tunnel. This results in a much higher volume of traffic hitting Bloomfield at the same time which causes crashes and/or tailbacks.
A basic of traffic management is when you improve one junction (in this case the tunnel) you look at the impact on nearby junctions (Mahon & Bloomfield). It's fairly obvious TII either didn't do it or ignored the results.
This is pretty much it. Traffic passing Rochestown is so heavy now that odds of an incident have increased. Add to this the volume of traffic joining at J9, plus the 'funnel' effect of the Douglas overpass and it's a perfect recipe for traffic carnage. And it's got SFA to do with speed either at rush hour - it's simply a case of it just taking a single driver to do something stupid (so, 0.01% of drivers at rush hour maybe?) and there's carnage. They don't have to be complete idiots either (although it does help) - just a moment's distraction (which is simple human nature) is all it takes. I consider myself a fairly decent driver but at that location I have both nearly rear ended someone, and nearly been rear ended (car behind brakes squealing etc), and I imagine that's the case for the large majority using it daily. Luck was on my side on both occasions - but can't be for everyone.

It's not, its speed. People coming off that ramp at J9 at the rate of 100kmph into traffic that's traveling at 30kmph.

That ramp needs to be removed, or blocked off, no need for it.
It's not the best of junctions to be fair. Not helped by people getting all protective of their space in their respective lanes and not allowing adjoining traffic enter in a filter/zip type manoeuvre, "fuckin' jog on pal". See it regularly on the N22 out by EMC where 2 lanes become 1 and those on the inside lane take offence at people in the overtaking lane not joining the queue a kilometre back, causing an inevitable halt. It's quiet common to see a few heroes straddle the broken white line in the middle a few hundred metres back to put an end to all that nonsense.

The only junction in Cork(possibly Ireland) where etiquette remains is at the roundabout off J5 on the same road heading Eastward. It's like the law at this stage.
