Tunnel/Dunkettle traffic in morning

Coming down the M8 is an absolute disgrace in the mornings. Theres never much of queue going down the left hand lane for Little Island and East Cork. There’s always a queue in the right hand lane to get to the tunnel so what do some impatient drivers do?

Of course, drive down the inside lane and slam on at the end to cut back in.
Yep, ive been banging on about it. Its frankly why I dont go into the office Mon-Thur

I was driving up the M8 at around 8:30 / 9:00 this morning.
I could not believe the tailback, right from Dunkettle all the way to about 100 meters short of junction 18.
How do people who travel that route every morning cope with that?

there is a simple solution.... it would not be popular but it would solve the issues... make the speed limit 30kph...travel time for tunnel to dunnes bishopstown about 20min. Currently its 9min if no speed limit... less chance of accidents and flows would be more consistent... it would take an extra 10mins but it wold be consistent... put average speed cameras along the way to stop the lawless

There is a technical issue with average speed cameras.
When traffic is crawling along and vehicles are very close to each other, it is not possible to recognise or even see the registration numbers of the vehicles

If they cant read all of them wont matter... even 30% would be enough to enforce...

well as if that would help with anything... it doesn't. The issue is not speed but useless drivers not knowing how to drive. Much of the traffic is caused by those "safe" drivers, driving 30km/h on the speed lane, full stop to merge, not using indicators and merge lanes. Wrong positioning and skipping lanes. People who consider mirrors as a decoration of their car. The ones who want to keep a safe distance of 50 m in a traffic jam. And on, and on, and on.

Introducing speed limit will not change anything. But one simple patrol would make a difference if they would actually pick those idiots and give them tickets for reckless driving and causing danger on the road.

Like if introducing a speed limit would resolve for example some fools from stopping at the roundabouts to get someone out from the car when giving them a lift...

No sure if they work, a friend of mine picked up a M50 toll fine and they sent the picture with the visible reg and she has the grey plates.

Those plates do not work against cameras, as the cameras are not only working in a visible light range. It only works for other users of the road, as it is hard to read those in poor conditions.

This is not that. The right lane is the only lane for the tunnel and the left lane if for East Cork. That’s clearly signposted.

The zipper merge is for merging from right to left. Whereas these impatient drivers are trying to merge from left to right.
The left lane isn’t closed. They could have a solid white line well back from it to make the point more clearly. People going wrong there still have a chance to correct themselves.

That’s gas. So there’s some of the people trying to cut in think that’s grand?! 😄
