Tricolours in town

I don’t agree with him all the time but Ken O Flynn’s stance on this is right.
Give us one day like.
Indeed. Shannon seems to think that Irish culture and history, maybe even Western culture and history, is not to be celebrated on its own. The D&I crowd had a secondary school textbook out about 18 months ago which portrayed one Irish family as backward because they liked GAA, holidayed at home and, in a proper Irish manner, had their dinner at 1pm. The other Irish family were cosmopolitan as they travelled abroad frequently and drank lattes. Fortunately, the indoctrination document was withdrawn but it's the same attitude at play here.

That sounds like a bit of a stretch.

In terms of the claim that ' Irish History & Culture is not to be celebrated on its own' ....perhaps a less antagonistic perspective is that they endeavour to include the multi- cultural society that clearly prevails in Ireland and will continue to prevail.

The middle section of your post about the proper Irish manner of dinner at 1pm versus drinking Lattes again sounds like a bit of a stretch.

If there was such a document of indoctrination, which was subsequently withdrawn, one can only assume it was intercepted rightly so, by right minded people.
Probably the same people who advocate for inclusion and positivity for the changing times.
Not for some vacuous blethering about meal times and beverages.

This seems like a lot of drama over two imaginary Irish families in a schoolbook.

Irish culture isn’t so fragile that a latte or a trip abroad suddenly makes someone “cosmopolitan” and detached from it. Plenty of people watch the GAA, holiday in Ireland, and also travel or drink coffee. None of that cancels the other out.

The idea that there’s some organised campaign to replace Sunday dinner with cappuccinos is probably giving a school book a bit too much credit.

Ironically the people portrayed as the progressive types with pasta dinners and alphabet gendered cats are in reality attending monocultural Gaelscoileanna while the family of ginger haired spud munchers are experiencing the true realities of multi culturalism(the positives and the negatives) the minute they cross the school gate/walk around their towns without have to watch traditional Far Eastern dances from the luxury of a 5 star poolside while wearing a sari, out of respect, yaw!

So ex Brittish squadie is anti gaelscoils.
Quelle surprise.
(See what I did there)

Major problem with any expressions of Irish culture but best friends with racist loyalists.
So brainwashed yet first to claim it in others.

Missed my point completely.

However, for what it’s worth, both of our children attended the local Gaelscoil, one even went into the local Gael Coláiste.

Where have I ever expressed issues with Irish culture? The post was related to that silly cartoon that came out a couple of years ago depicting a “traditional “ Irish family as slightly backward and a more “enlightened” family as progressive and a target ideal.

The truth and reality, is of course, far more nuanced. Hope that explains it a little more without having to resort to drawings and big spellings.

Well thats horseshit m8. Im in the arse end of the country and a low income family, no alphabet gendered cats but a border collie instead and plenty of spuds for dinner and both my kids are fluent as gaeilge. In fact one has done the leaving through Irish and the other is doing the Junior cert through Irish.
So bang goes that shit theory of yours.

Genuinely baffled. I’m referring to a cartoon that depicts certain families as one way and others as another way.

What’s my shit theory?? That the reality is more nuanced? Are you happy with your family model being portrayed as the lesser. ( it sounds like a solid wonderful unit by the way)

M8.
You referenced the cartoon only when I challenged you.
What you said, and I quote.

All of that above is horseshit.
Im not progressive, im not well off, my kids attend a gaelscoil where the majority are children of small farmers or working class aka the ginger spud munchers you referenced.
There is some cultural diversity in the school but it is limited as a result of it being a country school and the most local ipas centre being in the local town which has several secondary schools none of which are gaelscoileanna.
Yes it is more nuanced no it is not ironic.

I think tbf what he said has some truth in urban areas.

The long and the short of it is that the typical Irish person or family has changed and that irritates narrow minded people greatly.
