Training Run Times

Tougher than expected spin this morning on the DCM prep program – 18 miles, same as last week but over hills this time. I was due to pick up a buddy after three miles and set out solo, only to meet El Guapo coming over de Valera Bridge, so he pulled me along for 3 with him. LOL, great to see him, but feck, he was about 20 seconds faster per mile than my first three were going to be, so I was burning a bit to hold onto him and glad to jump after the three.

LOL, Sorry about that, grand morning for it. It's fucking weirdly humid even with the bit of a breeze.

How are things lads.
I've followed this thread for a very long time but this is my first post I think. I remember when some madman (Carta?) started doing his ultras, that's how long I'm following!!

Anyway, I'm getting close to 40 and decided to run cork marathon next year. I have my bib (nearly got caught by the ballot).

I started from a very low training base, I struggled to do 3k at the start of June. Now 3 months later, I'm clipping along nicely, I ran 99k in August, last week I did 2×6k, a 7k and my long run was 12k.

My main aims to get miles in the legs before the new year then knuckle down and do a training plan pre cork.

At the moment I'm using Strava on my phone to track, runs, walks etc, have basic road running Adidas shoes and wired headphones for some tunes

I need to get 3 things
1. A GPS watch (insurance will refund 40 if there's a heart monitor)
2. Bluetooth over the ear head phones
3. New runners.

What of the above 3 should be my priority, any recommendations, budget friendly!!

Also where or how would I go about getting a structured pre marathon plan?

Thanks for yet help in advance lads
Besta luck.

Advice. Don't go mad on anything.

Shoes are the main thing.

Find shoes you like and get them on sale. Elverys and the like have a decent sale currently. Consider two pairs. I find the rotation helps you not get hurt.

Watch, I've only used Garmin, it's great. Coros supposedly great too. Again look for sales you don't need the top end one.

Most of the metrics are bollocks..VO2 only usefull for bragging rights and not accurate, It's okay at thresholds I've found. Wrist HR isn't great, Really you only need pace. everything else is bells and whisles

Garmin Pay is probably handy but I haven't used it, there is music option on most models but again I've no interest

No idea about headphones.

Plan:

I found this very readable but haven't used it (yet)

it's new so recognises the fact that watches and supershoes are a thing.

This is well got. Pfitz also a good option.

The only advice I’d give about headphones is something that remains attached to your body. Having to stop and pick something up that sweat knocked out in the middle of a run can be annoying.

Something like these work for me. Keep the volume down as well!

Also, Terrier’s heroics made me go out and run a bit earlier. Strava told me during the week my last proper 5k was two years ago. :(

Best of luck C4L

Carmona is training for Valencia, timeout is going through purgatory trying to get back from injury for Chicago and I’m looking to prep for Dublin.
LOL, and smurf has either entered, not entered or not not entered Dublin.

Guapo is talking a good prep for XC season - out burning the miles at 06:00 yesterday.

That’s not bad lads, not quite the old days but four autumn marathons and an XC campaign ain’t too shabby.

Some good advice there Carrig

Ive always run without head phones as I just like the peace of it all, so whilst I could give you plenty of advice on a decent set of cans I have no idea whether they will stay in place while you run!

I found that Nikes running shoes have fit my feet well over the years and always have 2 pairs.. probably because El-G told me the same thing he has just told you. I have always just found pairs on sale, I'm not going to be winning any races so generally a pair from last year for half price is my go to, I'd generally pick something up for around €115-125

I run with an Apple Watch linked to Strava. It seems to work fine for me, always has, but I presume Garmin or something like that is better since they are purpose designed as such

Good luck, and keep the updates coming here 💪
