Training Run Times

Last long run of my Boston “training” program this morning. 23 miles is a significant emotional experience no matter what shape you’re in, so it was great to close it out. Eleven miles prep on loops in and out around the Monkstown line / Marina, then twelve miles over the hills of the Barracka / Model Farm Road / Carriganara / Ballincollig / Angler’s Rest / Lee Road / Mardyke / North Quays loop.

Same old form as the last months – dogged 8+-minute miling and no real ability to go any faster. Normally you’d look forward to the freshness that would come with a taper, but you can’t taper off of 25-30 miles per week. I don’t know if I’m just out of condition or if age means I’ve permanently gone over a cliff in terms of ability to run at any kind of speed. Even short runs don’t come any faster, so I don’t know.

Either way, 23 miles checked off means I can aim to get on the plane on Saturday week - LOL, I can even invest in a few gels 💪

Got my Boston number this morning - 20507, all the way back in wave 4, corral 7 - that wave doesn't even start until 10:41.
How the mighty have fallen, it's not that long ago since I was wave 1, pen 3 with a number in the 2,000s

Still though - I'm there on the start list (y)
How is your general Knee Malady holding up?

In fairness, it's allowing training to continue - based on just two runs a week though. I also do one day on the elliptical and three days of S&C weights. The knee is always vaguely there, threatening in the background - you can feel it when you stand up or turn over in the bed or whatever. One issue I had last year was that the knee issues were causing the whole leg to sieze up if I did a long run. So far, that has stayed away on this campaign.

Guapo, I think you recommended a knee joint tonic to jimmy a while back - pills or capsules or something - what was that?

Good stuff. I know the feeling of a spectre injury. it's always there is right

This is the stuff I take.

Kinetica Collagen powder.

I honestly don't know if it helps. The science is mixed on efficacy. But if you google the "Active" fortigel they have some limited studies showing it improved knee Collagen thickness (moderate milage does the same over a longer term)

I also take some creatine (the same kinetica one) one scoop of each with breakfast. I do think that helps a bit with recovery, the science there is more clear 5-15g and it's well established and widely used for recovery. but obviously it could well be placebo.
