Training Run Times

Anyone else doing the Valentia Half marathon? I see it's going to be a fuckin gale force. Not what you want for an already challenging course.

Afraid not EastwoodY. I've run that loop in the past though - a bastard first 5km but after that you're pretty much downhill / flat all the way. The wind will be strong - no hiding from that - and on a loop circuit that means 50% of it is against you - pretty much all in the first half. However, a due southerly gale is forecast, so it'll rarely be directly in your face - and the last third will be a cross-tailwind. No dressing up the rain though - you'll be getting a good soaking.

Am all set to hear the race report ;)

Good luck!

It’s a dog - good luck. I’m Kerry-bound myself in the morning but not Valentia. The weather looks shocking for the weekend.. rain or wind, or rain and wind!

My maiden race report.
A tough outing but well worth the trip. It was fairly blustery to put it mildly. The first km you have the wind at your back so that's a rocket km for everyone. It was uphill after that for a good 4km. This was fairly sheltered and found myself with a nice group here going at a solid pace. I was delighted to see the turnaround point at the top of the hill where you double back. By this stage the race leader was way out on his own.
The next 7km were fairly horrendous. There were points where you were being blown across the road. Going up hills into that wind was "character building" to put it mildly. Found myself on my own from the 7km ish mark onwards to the end but was content enough. Turning for "home" at about 12km was some relief. For the last 9km you had the wind somewhat behind you. It was completely at your back for the last km.
All done thank fuck. Ended up faster than I planned and for a PB which I wasn't expecting!!

Well done, I’m in Kerry, conditions were savage today. No Idea how anyone could run a decent time not to mind a PB in those winds! Fair play 👍
