Training Run Times

Got my MRI result, osteoarthritis, fluid and inflamation in the knee but more worrying a medial Meniscus tear, small enough tear ,
I go from one minute saying a few months rest and rehab will see me back running even short distances to next minute
feeling i just need to accept it and hang up the runners, I will go with the former for now and get back into the gym and see where it takes me,
I want to get back but dont want to get back and find my fitness is completely gone, If i can maintain a base then i can see where it takes me,
 
On the one hand that's a tough diagnosis Jimmy, on the other hand it's what most ageing runners are dealing with.

The tear has probably exacerbated the pain as well as the flud / inflammation but the osteo would have been there for a good while. Once the tear calms down and makes an effort to repair itself, you'll be able to get back for some steady running. The gym, the static bike and the pool are your friends in the meantime.

Every MRI I've got in the past two years has delivered similar results to yours - and there's plenty of other lads getting the same s**t inevitable news. It's a decline, but a decline you've to try and manage.
 
From my side, in full raging against the dying of the light mode, I'm plugging away with the aim of Boston on Apr 20th. I can't manage repeated training over distance, so it's very conservative. The running started in January at 5 mile distance twice a week and the aim is to steadily increase the weekend distance but not the frequency of running.

ATM, the week is

Monday - Gym (Strength)
Tuesday - Gym (Elliptical trainer)
Wednesday - Gym (Strength)
Thursday - 7 miles at 8 to 8:10 pace per mile
Friday - Gym (Strength)
Saturday - Off
Sunday - "Long" Run at 8-min pace

At this stage the long run is up to 17 miles, completed with timeout on Sunday. The problem is that because there's no running during the week, there's no fitness, leading to a right old dose of DOMS yesterday and today. Ideally I'd get 3 X 20-miles done before the first week of April, then recover a bit coming into marathon day. It all depends on the knee (meniscus / osteo, same as jimmy) not giving up in the interim. I'm just delighted to be out running and hoping the years of high mileage don't do for me. LOL, some craic looking to do a marathon on 2 runs per week.

17 miles at a decent pace, Terrier. Your 'retired' comment was definitely a bit early. A couple of 20 milers and you'll be set.

I see the Boston QT for auld lads is fairly generous. Might think about it when I'm retired in a year or two. If I can still run of course!
 
I tore my Meniscis in 2006, again in 2016 and again in 2024.

twice on the right leg once on the left leg.

I don't have arthritis to deal with thank gawd.

But a small meniscus tear is okay. I did not regret the surgery. In you'll be back walking next day and back Walk/Run two weeks afterwards once the stitches come out.

You feel a small bit weird for the first couple of runs but adapt really quickly and it's grand.

Since then I do these weekly.


30s isometric holds, it feels weird at the start but my knees feel way better.

Cheers Marky. Pain is manageable while running - can be sore the next day alright. But I know from experience that the leg siezes up if I run too often - hence the twice a week caper.

Be great to do it together C. - a reprise of our great Rotterdam two-hander back in the day.

BTW, when you were getting ready for Valencia last year, how far was your longest run? And how many times a week did you risk going out? You still did around 3:40, right?
