Training Run Times

Headed to Kinsale on sunday for the 10 mile race, Wasnt really sure how i would get on,
Started at a sensible pace, Fair few hills first 5 miles, Tough going, As the miles went by i began to
ask questions of myself, Am i enjoying these longer runs? No, Had to walk a few times as my knee was sore,
Finished and as soon as i crossed the line i said right from here on now just concentrate on 10ks maximum,
Plenty of races to come , Sharpen my pace and just enjoy it,

Thats a fair enough conclusion JimmY, its one of the best things about getting older.. find what suits you and forget peer pressure or anything else.

16km is a hell of a run, a seasoned runner will reel it off without thinking twice, but to anyone else it is fair going and impossible for the vast majority of people. If 10km is your range for now and you feel like you are actually enjoying the run then more power to you.

I have no idea where I am or what I'm at. I know its an excuse but the weather has allowed me the excuse to stop running midweek altogether. Work has also gone up a significant notch in the last 6 months so I am getting home later and feeling wrecked. At the same time I am getting an 8km at a nice pace in every Saturday morning and I enjoy those, but I am nowhere near the training I had decided to do, and highly unlikely to get the olympic tri I really want done either

It's all about enjoying the running Jimmy - loads of lads avoid the long distance. From my side, I was never as competitive at the shorter spins - so I focused on the marathons - LOL, to my cost nowadays.
The only thing I'd say before you abandon the 10-milers is that you are not that long back in the saddle. By all means, focus on the 5 and 10k stuff, but as you strengthen and develop endurance, you may well feel able to return.
The 10-mile is a really cool distance - it's long enough to really get into the body of a race, to embrace the challenge alone and to manage your pace. At the same time, it's short enough that you don't need to go through the deeply emotional journey and physical purgatory that you get from mile 20 on in the marathon. Kinsale is a tough old spin - Mallow, Dungarvan and The 'Barrs 10-milers are much kinder ;)

Thanks lads, The only plus point from sunday was having three lovely looking girls in the car with me on the way down,
I made sure i brought my Marvin Gaye CD, What puzzles me is i did the half in waterford pretty comfortably but found sunday a struggle,

You're not alone on that Jim, All reports from our club were under performances across the board be it wind or hills or whatever.

Sometimes things catch fire. Sometimes even Marvin Gaye had to catch the last bus home and get his Mam to leave him in the front door

In honour of the great man, now that we have the unexpected experience of discussing him on the PROC running thread, here is the only "Marvin Gaye in Sport" vid. An absolute classic from the 1983 NBA All-Star game.

Ran past his apartment in Ostend two years ago, when I could still just about run.
