Training Run Times

Had a good few weeks of training, Tuesday nights and thurs 5 miles, Sunday mornings 10k, Last saturday week i did 8. 5 miles,
Middle of last week i got a message saying a ticket for waterford half was available, I decided to take it, 18 of us headed off on a bus,
Got to the HQ 8.15 , Headed into the complex to stay warm, Got a bit of a warmup run in before the 9.30 start,
Reminded myself to just relax and see where the run takes me, Off we went and heavy traffic saw my 1st mile@ 9.50,
That was fine for me as it kept me grounded, 2ND mile was 8.38 so i decided to pull it back, On we went and after 5 miles headed onto the greenway,
I was tipping along at about 9.05 pace and felt fine, The miles flew by, I had been warned about a stiff climb at mile 10 and yes it was a tester,
I walked some of it, I had been on track for maybe 1.59 finish but last 3 were tough going, Came in 2.03 , Well pleased with that,
Considering my previous longest run since april was 8. 5 mies, Dungarvan 10 mile on sale this morning so will train hard for that,

Good man, we were suffering simultaeneously!

I honestly don’t know if I’ll do another one, I am well aware that lack of training and injury/sickness contributed massively to the hell yesterday was but they are a big toll on the body

I’ll just let things sit for a bit and see where I am then

I’ve only ever done a 10 mile as part of a quest but it’s a great distance (y)

Great Stuff Jimmy & HH. Great to get out on a lovely morning in what was close to perfect conditions. There are more tough days than easy ones but having the desire to get out there and do it for yourself is what its all about. A half marathon at beginning of December is a nice way to carry yourself to the end of the year, ive always liked Waterford & Clonakilty for that reason.

Ive jumped back into a couple of races over the last month as well having hopefully put a tricky injury behind me or at least in the rearview mirror.
DCM went better than expected considering the lack of mileage and Waterford on Saturday was another good day out with a strong finish which has me happy to apply myself a bit more over the next while.
When youre a bit banjaxed for a period and the fitness you took for granted has long left the body, you almost forget what it felt like to be able to get out and enjoy even a short run without it being a shaggin struggle the whole way around. I dont think ive ever been a lover of the act of running as some are but theres no better buzz than the sense of wellbeing over a coffee after an honest mornings work with likeminded folk.

I was so happy afterwards, Great craic on the bus down and back, I knew it would be a challenge but loved it, That hill on mile 10 off the greenway had a lot of people walking, I love seeing the same faces at the races during the year, One highlight for me was after the CORKBEG 4 MILE race in July a fella who had been
alongside me all the way came over to me at the finish and shook my hand and said fair play i enjoyed that little battle,

Thats magic Jimmy. Were only out there battling against ourselves, always nice to have a bit of friendly competition to drive us on as well. I never looked at the course profile ahead of Saturday and the hill at mile 10 caught me by surprise too. It was a lumpy course but plenty couldnt fault it at all.
On we go to Dungarvan on 1st Feb!

At mile 11 i found myself running alongside a girl in a youghal singlet, A few words of encouragement were said and i drove on only for her to pass me half a mile from home ,

Sounds like you’re flying and enjoying it Papa.. I suppose buying new running shoes yesterday means I need to postpone the retirement a while!
