Training Run Times

Sub 25min (just) 5km for me tonight for the first time since I got back running after injury. Delighted as it’s a milestone but prob terrible timing given the race on Sat.. I was bursting with energy though so just ran at what I knew was a quick pace

Hopefully I can get the run on Saturday done in 26 min max now, big ask with the climb in it and other legs done

Is it a sprint or Olympic distance?

Sprint @ Valentia island, the Hardman one

I’m not quite there with 26min 10kms yet 😂
Then you'll fly it. You'll be well warmed up after swim and bike and will horse into the run, the downhill compensating for the up. I've done Valentia a few times (when it used to kick off the season and the water was freezing, LOL) and it's a fairly fast course.

Do they still do the swim over from the mainalnd? That was cool

Yeah, weather dependent - last year was a glorious day for the race so the swim across was amazing.. bar me swimming a big V shaped course because I started on the right to help a buddy and sure enough drifted way out on that side since I breathe on my right. Lesson learned, he can swim on his own this year!

It seems this year will be the last of Alan organising them, so thats that I'd say. What a shame, it was you guys on here that encouraged me to go there for the first time 3 years ago and I've been back for each one since. Its one I would never have missed bar injury or sickness.. hopefully someone steps in

Thomas kent 10k sunday, My recent 5 mile runs have me averaging 44 mins, If i pace this right il be happy with somewhere around 54 minutes,
A few nice pulls first 3.5 miles but latter section of the race is kind enough,
Nice one Jimmy, something to look forward to

You’ll have to line up behind a tidy, slightly faster woman and who knows what’s possible!

Meanwhile, on my side, fingers crossed, there has been no major injury fallout so far and the knees are OK since Copenhagen HM.

Per above, I got an entry for Boston in April. Given the damage that extensive long distance training seems to be doing, all going well, I won’t start any distance stuff until January.

For now, three spins a week (no run more than 10 miles), two gym sessions, and a bit of core work if I can manage it.

For the first time since January 2024, I went out last night to do some speedwork – a very modest 4 X 800 on the cards – 2-mile warmup and 3-mile warm down. Ideally, over the weeks ahead, you’d look to increase the speed and number of reps. Conditions were perfect but Jaysus, the performance was very modest – first rep at 3:23 working down to the last one at 3:09. LOL, shagged after each rep.

Still, great to be out doing your best on a beautiful evening.

Priority 1 – Avoid injury

Priority 2 – Speed up and put some hardness into the legs
