Training Run Times

Churchtown south 4 mile race,
What a lovely spot, about 5 miles from Cloyne, About 180 runners, I decided to ease into for the 1st mile,
Very scenic route, Mile 1 8.49, onto mile 2 and you had the ocean on your left side, Lovely view, Some nice pulls,
Not the best of miles 9.10. Saw two colleagues of mine ahead in the distance and said id see if i could reel them in, Mile 3 8.48,
Wanted to make sure i had a kick for the last few minutes, Closed the gap on my colleagues but didnt pass them, mile 4 8.48
Fantastic spread of sandwiches ,cake, tea afterwards, I had hoped to shave a minute off my time but not to be last night,

Cycled Midleton to Youghal and back earlier, great to see so many people using it. There even were actual water fountain things. It’s a credit to you and all of your people Jimmy.
It is a great amenity, We did a 5k handicap challenge there tuesday night, I recently cycled to youghal, Great to be out in the fresh air,
The Mogeely tidy towns group did a major litter pick along a section last weekend,

My young fella has decided he wants to run the 5k race while I’m doing the 10km tomorrow morning - will be nice to have him there but the day is fast approaching where he is quicker than I am officially.. all that will save me tomorrow is the different distances!

The weather looks decent here and tide times are perfect with low tide pretty much at kick off so hard sand

Some of the kids are incredibly fast, One of my neighbours is 14 she is an absolute flyer, Best of luck tomorrow,

Yeah, he’s more a field sports lad than a runner but he’s very fit, he did a practice run yesterday and ran just shy of 5km in 25mins on soft sand!

Anyway, my 10km route will be significantly harder for reasons he wont be able to see yet! :)

It was pristine yesterday. There was a mad section where it went from warm to slightly cooler with the smell and feel of the sea. Lovely stuff.

We met a 75 year old guy in Mogeely who was cycling back from Youghal and he gave us a 15 minute breakdown of the Cork hurling team debacle last week. Also met a man from New Jersey who was beaming from ear to ear.

I cycled it when I was home last week (part of), its fantastic. Bike repair stations and all.

Rented a tandem bike with the small fella. They wouldn't let me sit at the back unfortunately. Hes got legs like a piston engine and hes not even 7. Had to shout at him to hold back at times we were leaving his Mam in the dust!

Did the Brandon Bay 10km this morning - what a class event for anyone interested. 1000 runners between the 5km, 10km and HM distances. Great atmosphere on the beach, glorious sunshine and a hefty wind blowing. The organisation of it all is top class in fairness to the locals that run it. Good craic at the start line too, I got chatting with the pacers to try get the youngfella sorted since it was his first run. Met the 55 min pacer and blurted out that I hoped I wouldnt be seeing her again, no idea what to expect given I’m only back running a few weeks

The first 2km was just getting used to it all, despite the run being on a beach I never expected to be running through that much water, the course was marked out just above the low tide mark but it had only just gone out so we were running a film of water for at least a third the course I’d say, didn’t take long for the feet to get soaked. Anyway, around the first bend at 2km and we were running into a strong headwind, tough going. Kept at it out to the turn but the wind was strong and I could sense that I was flagging. Looking at my watch I had drifted out to 5.45/km from 5.20. Round the cone and had the wind behind us now which was nice but I must have settled in to it because at the 6km mark I heard someone behind me telling me to pick up the pace, turned the head and it was the pacer! Go on, off with ya, you didn’t want me ahead of you so I lifted the pace back to 5.20. In to 8km at that bend and the bloody wind was back in front of us again. Head down, grind out the last 2km, plenty of encouragement from family and friends in the final stretch.

Finished just the wrong side of 54 mins, delighted with that all things considered. That’s my longest run of the year and the first ever on sand

I set the youngfella off with the 30min pacer for his 5km and told him to just stay with them for a while to see how it was to try get him to pace himself a bit. His report was that they were way too slow so he left them behind and took off after the group spread out. Fair play to him, 26.xx in his first race ever, he’s absolutely delighted with the medal and top.. lovely morning to share together so hopefully he has the bug and keeps some level of interest in it all as it’s a great interest

You'd really enjoy it Jimmy - I have a feeling it might be the only series of races on a beach like this but wouldn't be certain either, it's a brilliant day. I'm definitely up for running it again next year, the only issue is that it has been the same date that the Ballybunion triathlon has been on so I would do that if it goes ahead, but I'm not sure its going to be back unfortunately

I've uploaded a few shots my missus took to give a sense of it
