Training Run Times

Back to the Physio yesterday and one step forward two steps back. Few days last week and thought things are going well, Saturday, limped around for the whole day for no reason. Gave me another few variations on glute bridge and said I might try on/off run next week. She also didn’t rule out a half at the end of March although I’m not as optimistic.

Rowing plan continues and I’m now almost at the sweet spot of being able to watch full Netflix episodes to pass the time.
You’ll be giving the O Donovans a run for their money if you keep this up MarkY!

I had ants in my pants tonight as hadn’t run since last weekends race. The physio told me 4 weeks rest but it was freezing cold and dry, and I felt I needed to try. The hip came at me at about 3.5km but ran on anyway with mild discomfort to just over 7km. Didn’t realize until I stopped that I’d done it at 5:00/km pace

Talking pace, I just remembered to check my official time for the HM as I was going off my watch.. turns out I was slightly quicker that I had figured and ended up in the 1:50s.. Jesus, I got close to getting the sub 1:50! Grrrr :)

Back in Valencia again for another marathon year. As coach this time!! Just met my lad Quinn, fuck he's gone thin! Hope I haven't overdone it...... He's aiming for 2.28. I told the fooker not to go out at faster than 3.30km pace. Hope he listens to me. Only his 3rd marathon at 27 years old. Last for a year or two I'd say as he's about to become a Daddy

Race Report of sorts!

Santa Dash at St Annes park today which involved about 1000 people running 5km, 10km - or a 2.2km course with mainly kids racing. Everyone wandering around on a lovely sunny winters morning in the Santa suit you’re given to wear, lovely atmosphere in the park

Preparation for this involved our Christmas Day out and dinner with friends so numerous pints and bottles of wine down the hatch yesterday.. feeling gingerly enough this morning! Anyway, on to the start line which was rammed, I pushed towards the front as I figured there would be loads of occasional runners.. started to realise how warm it was going to be inside that suit! I noticed a few of the more serious runners were not wearing the pants or hat, and with that the guy next to me shoots a gel and you’re wondering what’s going on!

The race itself was very uneventful.. couldn’t say it was that enjoyable as the heat inside those suits was mental! I just focused on keeping it steady but quick and kept my place just back from the leaders as it all stretched out, swapped a place or two here and there, that was about it, crossed the line for 24:08 chip time, watch giving me 24:05

If yesterday hadn’t been what it was, and the red boiler suit I’m fairy sure I’d have shaken those few secs to dip under 24mins which would have been nice. Very happy with the consistency though 4:51, 4:50, 4:50, 4:46, 4:52. That’s the threshold run done I suppose

The nicest bit of the day though was my kids running in the 2.2km race, they took it out together and to be fair to the youngfella he held off so his sister could stay with him. They crossed the line joint 2nd place and convinced they will don the green :)

2 weeks since anyone posted here.. probably reflective of the cold shitty weather and little or nothing going on in the training scene?!

I have changed the plan I was setting out for next year as I want to do the Ring of Beara Cycle with a few buddies in May, someone described the atmosphere along the route, it sounds like a brilliant event IF the weather plays ball. I have my entry sorted and a house down there so it was time to get back in the saddle this weekend. I hung the bike up at the end of September after the Valentia tri so it had been a while, got out at the crack of dawn yesterday morning out around Dublin bay heading south, met the buddies at Merrion gates and then back around the bay, up over Howth and down into the village, turn around and back over Howth on the steep side, back along the bay and home. 55km in hard winds with a decent bit of climbing and kept a decent average speed going too. Got back home feeling it, into the car and cramped! Theres work to be done, mileage to get into the legs to be able to enjoy Beara but I have started at least. Ill be sticking the bikes on the car for Christmas so I'll be getting out on the roads and up to Ballyhoura a few times, and getting the runs in as well - new Vapourfly 3's arriving today as my current shoes are done.

The events I have locked in for next year at this stage are:
End Jan - Raheny 5 mile race
April - Quest Glendalough
May - Ring of Beara Cycle
July - Ballybunion tri (sprint)
Aug - Fenit tri (sprint)
September - Valentia tri (sprint)
November - Clontarf HM

Thinking I might do the Wicklow 100 in June since I will hopefully be flying on the bike with Beara just done. All of this making the Olympic tri seem unlikely again, the plan was to see if I could get myself in shape for the Harbourman Tri which would be end May so will clash with the Beara cycle

I need to get the mileage in on the bike over winter and spring, obviously will head out if the weather is anyway reasonable, but thinking I need a turbo. I dont have space to set one up permanently so i need one that I put out on the floor, and I also dont want one that I have to take wheels off bikes etc for. I only have 1 road bike so no spare I could set up. I have a buddy with a WattBike, theres no way Im spending anything like that, but I dont have a place to leave it out anyway. Does any one use a turbo they use and would recommend?
