Training Run Times

The HM is the 16th, so Sat week Ive followed El-G's training plan for the last while so just wondering what would make sense now with just under 2 weeks to go?

Is is best to keep with the 40 min interval sessions tomorrow and Thursday, then get one last 18/19km long run in at the weekend, and then keep to really short runs after that, or should I do one more interval session on the following Tuesday again? Or something else altogether?!

i'd be inclined to taper. Drive on this tues/thurs.

You will have to decide on the long run, depends how much it takes out of you the difference between 18.5 in training and 21. 1k on race day won't make much odds.

Even if you did 10miles (16k) or something for your head and a bit for your legs and practice with any gels or drinks you plan would be worthwhile but by all means if you want to run 19 and know it won't cook you do.

Next week scale back, maybe two thirds on Tues (5 reps not 8) , maybe half on thurs maybe 15 or 20mins at race pace (a bit slower than your reps) with 5mins warm up and Cool down.

Maybe a 10 min jog on Friday if you want

You'll know yourself better you want to be fresh on the Saturday.

I think I'll take it handier at the weekend so, maybe 15/16km as you suggest. last weekend took a bit out of me, but I also spent the whole of Sunday packing my brothers house into a van, down the country, and then unloading it again so came out of the weekend battered physically and tired!

I'll do tonight and thursday as usual then, they dont take too much out of me since I slowed the pace a bit, and then next week ill just keep things ticking over

I think I'll let the gels for the race, I haven't taken any in training. Last year they worked out fine, i took one at 13km which is when you turn off the coast road and onto the causeway for the 2.5km loop there, and then took another one soon after I was back on the coast road and heading into the last 5km. This year I am hoping that since I haven't been using any in training I will get a nice kick from them, so thinking I might take the first at around 12km just before I hot the causeway as that is always windy, another just off it at 15/16km, and if I need to lash the last one in at 18/19km I'll do that. Does that sound like a reasonable plan?

Anybody doing Castlelyons sunday? Two years ago i did it in 49 mins, Il do well to break 54 mins this time, AGE,
tis a hoor Jimmy!

the other way of looking at it is that you are out racing and getting the 10kms in when most people of a similar age wouldn't have a hope of completing it, let alone worrying about the timing (y)

Gels and Nutrition are very personnel. You won't really need any for a half strictly speaking.

There is probably a 20 min lag getting it from your Gob to your Guts so leave the 18k Gel at home.

if you plan to take one, figure out where there is a water station and take it with a drop of water that's probably around 10k, and see how you are later on.

Ah, I didn't realise that!

I'll throw them on the belt and see how I am. I took a few last year in the HM and I took one in the Valentia tri this year so I know I dont react badly to them. Theres a water station just after the turn at 9km, I might take one there which would kick in for the causeway loop and then I can see if I fancy another one after
