The reference section in the city library can be quite helpful as you can go through the old papers on microfilm to find obituaries and stuff. Obviously the 1901 and 1911 census is a good starting point. There's also a lot of baptism records for cork parishes online which even give the names of the godparents, but unfortunately the handwriting on some of them is so bad that they can be useless sometimes.
I'd stay clear of those pay per view ancestry websites, never really found anything useful on them and they aren't worth the high subscription money...
The Church of the Latter-day Saints have an interest in being able to trace family trees and genealogy.
To assist with this the Church set up the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah in the USA.
Family History Centres are branch facilities of the Family History Library. Centres provide access to copies of microfilms and microfiche in the Family History Library to help patrons trace their ancestors.
There is no charge to use the Family History Centre resources.
The Family History Centres are staffed by volunteers. Call the FHC before visiting to confirm that they will be open.
