The trees on Knockpogue/Knockfree avenue

Right - a quick google suggests that the cycle lanes are part of a wider plan to link services and amenities in the area more safely for pedestrians and cyclists. They will also be removing roundabouts etc. Link here:

Roundabouts are the reason there's free flowing traffic in the area.
The current footpaths are safe for pedistrians (minus street lights)

How do they get to that 1km stretch? All hills - there's no one that's a leisurely cyclist or hobbie cyclist that can get to that route. Nevermind kids.
Fact.
Looking at it quickly it doesn't seem that they are trying to link that area to the rest of the city, they are trying to link facilities, schools etc along the route. Young families living there and near by would be more likely to get on their bikes and cycle to basketball training, school, swimming, soccer matches for whatever if the infrastructure was better for them

Im not commenting one way or the other, just pointing out that it is part of a bigger plan and not just about one stretch of road and a random cycle lane

Do you think the bigger plan has merit?

I'm not being smart but it's not possible to link to the city or even to facilities to be honest. Pick two facilities - Leisureworld at the top of the hill or Neptune end of Blackpool.
Look at all the hills, kids won't be using it. Maybe on their e-scooters but most certainly not their push bikes.
The dangers of kids freehwheeling down Fairhill, Sunvalley Drive, Spangle Hill, Lovers Walk, Pophams Road, Fairfield Avenue etc at speed or the opposite falling off bikes as they struggle with the inclines and are pushing left and right.

Spot on. Cycle lanes ideally are all interconnected but where that’s not possible it shouldn’t prevent cycle lanes in a locality linking facilities and amenities in that locality.

No I don't to be honest with you and gave my reason above.
The plans do more harm than good and it's been highlighted.

It's a community a lot of the community are elderly who require the on road parking outside houses.
Meals on wheels for the area based in parochial hall - where do they park collecting the food and then delivering to residents?
The church - very populated area with big funerals, where do you park?
The schools - currently have safe drop off/collection points with parking that does not impact flow of traffic in area.
Bingo in parochial hall which is hugely popular with senior citizens and younger people alike who socialise here instead of pub.
Sporting activity in the parochial hall in which teams in basketball travel from all over Ireland to attend on given weekends across the year.
Sam Allen pitches when busy don't provide enough parking spaces as is so over flow is on road.

Yes let's dig up an entire road, remove car parking spaces, and cut down a load of trees so a kid can cycle 60 seconds across knockpogue Ave to training or swimming safely, because obviously the same 5 min walk would be too strenuous. Well worth it 👏

Remove car parking spaces is their man issue. Hiding behind trees is to give the illusion that they care about the environment.

Let’s be honest about it.
