Same in Canada. Staying on Vancouver Island, we stopped at a supermarket in a town on the way to the house that I had rented for a week to get groceries and sundry supplies - i.e. drink.
At the end of the shop, where one would (rightly) assume there should be an offie, I just found tills and stuff so I asked a lad where the wine and beer was.
He looked at me like I was mental - "You can't buy alcohol here. You have to go to an LCBO or a brewery."
"Grand" says I and furiously Googled whatever the fuck an LCBO was.
Strictly and severely licensed by the government but they aren't as hardcore as they are in Scandanavia. The maddest thing was that nearly every LCBO that I went to had a government sanctioned weed dispensary adjoined.
