An Oireachtas Committee have decided that possession of drugs for personal use should no longer be an arrestable offence. Not just marijuana but ALL drugs.
They think though that local councils (not the Oireachtas) could bring in some kind of bye-laws whereby public drug use could be stopped.

Oh, and the same Committee want to outlaw the sale of large aerosol canisters because...erm...some people are abusing them for a high.



So - Heroin and Crack Cocaine for personal use OK, but how very dare you buy a large can of deoderant - you might get hooked on Lynx or Old Spice

So will this now legitimise small dealers as well?

Commercialisation like in the US has been a disaster, with a corresponding uptick in usage, strength of the drugs and accompanying Psychosis

Most places that decriminalised have not seen uptick in use Uruguay went a step further and limit strength of the drugs through control of supply.

This seems to be the way to go

It seems incredible that the US is just allowing free market capitalism on drugs like that, if you've been to Colorado since legalisation, you'd see the damage it's done to civilisation, people are fucked all the time, and just driving around like its normal.

I was in Thailand at Christmas with the family, they have permitted the sale of cannabis there. Got to say I didn't like it much, it is the equivalent of the vape shops here.. every 2nd or 3rd shop is selling weed now and the bang of it is absolutely everywhere you go constantly

The off licences (selling booze like) there are state owned.

it's like walking onto a social welfare office or something. Staff wearing a uniform like the work for CIE

No adverts, No promotion, careful control of who and how much people can buy.

Something like that may not be glamorous but it's better than fellas openly offering weed when you get off the bus like in Portugal

Again I regard legal control of supply by the state to be the lesser of two evils when compared with the kinahans controlling supply

100% - People in New York, Chicago and Toronto (I haven't been to Colorado) walking (or worse - driving) around out of their heads going about their daily lives and jobs.

I was in New York at the start of June. Weed has been legal there for a while now. They are "dispensaries" everywhere with people patronising them like you would a corner shop. Not just weed either - gummies, oils i.e. "easier" ways to consume the stuff. And I mean everywhere - there is a huge cannabis shop in Times Square right next to the big theatres and shops. It has completely changed certain areas in the barely 18 month since I was last there.

All of this legal product is weapons grade ganja. I was never much of a hash smoker when I was a young fella - I always preferred the drink (still do) but a friend of mine who was a seasoned sinsemilla somnambulist told me that the shit you can buy legally in the US now is "So strong that you'd need to know what you're at before buying and rolling. Some of it is too strong. Pick the wrong thing and your day is over."

I am not fully opposed to the decriminalisation of weed but we here in Ireland will not or, perhaps, cannot adhere to either the legal or social parameters and we will end up with people getting behind the wheel of a car stoned out of their gourd.

Same in Canada. Staying on Vancouver Island, we stopped at a supermarket in a town on the way to the house that I had rented for a week to get groceries and sundry supplies - i.e. drink.

At the end of the shop, where one would (rightly) assume there should be an offie, I just found tills and stuff so I asked a lad where the wine and beer was.

He looked at me like I was mental - "You can't buy alcohol here. You have to go to an LCBO or a brewery."

"Grand" says I and furiously Googled whatever the fuck an LCBO was.

Strictly and severely licensed by the government but they aren't as hardcore as they are in Scandanavia. The maddest thing was that nearly every LCBO that I went to had a government sanctioned weed dispensary adjoined.
