The Official Swimming Thread

LOL, the “filthy” Lee perception is ingrained in Cork DNA - all those years of the shoals of shit-eating mullet parked at Patrick’s bridge aren’t easily forgotten. In truth, since the main drainage in 2000, the Lee is way cleaner than most beaches. The mix of fresh water and salt water does taste weird, and you’ll meet seaweed and algae along the way, but it’s not dirty. Myself and some or all of our three sons do the race every year - it’s an iconic Cork event 😎

Great turnout at the Lee Swim yesterday. 500 hardy souls delivered the 2k. Somewhat of a major ballsup by the organisers though - Hannah O’Shea won the race - beat everyone and was first to the line. First time ever in close to 100 years that a female had won the overall race. The organisers didn’t even mention it at the prizegiving. Handed out the mens cup first then the womens (smaller) cup like it was business as usual. Very poor show. The event itself was great craic. I had swum precisely 5 times since the Lee swim in 2019 so I was happy to plod down along in the middle of the field and get the annual view of Cork from beneath!
Good man, Terrier, ye're great supporters of that event, tbf. How did your eldest get on?

The Duel in the Pool is back! Looks like the Aussies feel up to it again - Tokyo was definitely a big statement in their swimming rivalry with the States.

There's an open water race an' all (y)

Wiffen the wonderkid.

He’s absolutely flying it in the current SC season - 6th fastest 1500m time on the World all time list last weekend at the Scottish Open - 14:14.45 .

Then tonight at the Irish Winter Nationals at the NAC, he smashed the European record for the 800m - first ever Irish swimmer to break a European record - 7:25.96. That’s 4th on the global all-time list and just over 2 seconds shy of the World record. Insane pace and brilliant to see him smash the record at an Irish event in an Irish pool.

LOL, just for the craic he broke the Irish 400m record on the way to that 800 - 3:41.63 - g’wan kid!
