The Official Swimming Thread

Sarah Keane with a fulsome - and accurate- tribute this evening to Shane Ryan’s contribution to Irish elite swimming. She’s bang on - Ryan was the rock on which John Rudd built his elite program.

I'd go along with that a very measured intervention from Keane.

It's disappointing that Ryan has gone with the enhanced games, not that he's taken the soup (or the juice) but that he felt he had to pay the bills.

Ideally a European medalist and multiple olynpian would have been set up with a good gig in or out side of sport and at least have a solid career path.

I give Ryan bags of credit for straight up saying he's doing it for the cash and not spouting any shite about finding out quite how fast he can be. Even with medical supervision it's a gamble. People react differently to different medications, yes it's probably safe enough in the short term but you're playing with fire

All go in UL this weekend for the Munster short course championship. Some glittering talent on show at the top end - World and European medallists all over the shop - McCartney, Shortt, Bailey, and Corby, as well as Cassin, Davison, Godden and a few more. The national dev squads were out in force too. Great for the club swimmers to be able to line up alongside these Olympic and international athletes as they go for their SC times.

John Shortt broke a load of records -
  • National Junior 50 Free - 21.89
  • National Junior 200IM - 1:57.39
  • National Junior AND Senior 200 Back - 1:51.37
  • National Jumior 100 Back - 50.78

He wiped the field taking a mere 30 strokes in the 100.

It's some buzz to be down on the deck seeing all of this unfold.

3:37 is a decent time - his SC PB is 3:35 I think - which is 54 seconds per 100 average 😮

If he gets close to, or under that tonight, then that's a great step on the comeback road.

McCartney and Shortt - LOL - competitors in the recent Munster Short Course championship - are flying. Surely there's a good sub-1:50 in there for Shortt in the 200.

Jesus, they have cameras right in the middle of the call room. No hiding. Women's 400 first event - Gose is the hot favourite I assume

Edit - she got it - new ER too, at 3:54
