Meanwhile, for the second year in a row, Cork's own Dolphin SC are national club champions. Combined Men's and Women's scores easily outstripping the big Dublin and Nordie clubs.

The standard of the pre-champs training block and the sharpness of the taper this year was off the charts.

It wasn't always like this and won't last forever - heady times in Mayfield

Would I be right in thinking a lot of that is down to a certain front of house administrator in Mayfield swimming and leisure centre?

LOL, she retired a good while ago C., but her successor is continuing the great tradition. Mayfield LC and the staff are a big part of the success of the club - they are brilliant.

The North Channel is a funny one. Nobody had done it - it was considered pretty much impossible - then Carmel Collins did it in 2016. Carmel wouldn’t have been considered to be a strong OW swimmer but fair dues, she cracked it, and now there’s a few manage to do it every year.
The English channel is still the big one in this part of the world - a savage gig.

She did it on the sly too. She was pulled out of the water attemping the channel and organised the north channel attempt for a few months afterwards
