The Official Swimming Thread

Just collected my number (235) for the 2024 Lee Swim which goes off from the top of the North Mall today at 16:30. There's 500 or so entries, which means there'll be 18 waves going off at one-minute intervals.

No word yet on whether El Guapo has escaped from North Cork to take his place on the pontoon .

The front of the race will be fiercely contested by the usual group of 18 year-old uber-athletes from the swimming clubs, there'll be bragging rights for the various triathletes and open water racers in the second pod, and the rest of us will be splashing along behind. It's a great spectacle - hundreds of swimmers pouring down through the city - and there'll be a decent beers and burgers buzz on the Clarion boardwalk afterwards.

Well worth a look for anyone who is in town today. I think the tide is not until after 5 so it might be a slow enough spin this year.

Just registered. Mad dash home now to shave my shoulders

Best of Luck

Some cracking racing at the World Short Course Championships in Budapest this week. Seven world records yesterday, including an outstanding 21.43 for Ponti in the 50 'fly. Kate Douglass and Gretchen Walsh nailing world firsts in the 200IM and 50 'fly as well.

Ireland have pretty a decent team in action - with some key Paris competitors missing.

Nathan Wiffen scored 9th in the 1500 last night - took 6 + seconds off his PB too. 9th in the World is not too shabby - albeit in a smaller field.

Ellen Walshe nailed 2 PBs in the 200IM - she's now 3 seconds faster than a year ago. Fifth in a World Final is a great reward for her continued progress - that final is where Douglass broke the World record. Walshe also took the 50 fly national record down to 25.45 around 20 minutes before the 200IM final.

Then this morning Shane Ryan took nearly half a second off his 100 Free - down to 46.23 - to make the semi. Sub-46 can't be far away for him.
LOL, impressive tekkers for a lad motoring at that speed

More Irish records falling today and a final tonight for Shane Ryan in the 50 back.

At 1:53.19, Dolphin's own Jack Cassin also equalled the Irish record in the 200 Fly. He's only 20 and it's his first World Championships, so hopefully there's more to come from him.

LOL, a special assignment photographer on duty too

First big swim meet of the long course season kicks off in Bangor this morning - the Dave McCullagh International.

A few Olympic medalists on show, including GB’s Duncan Scott.

Dolphin with a very strong team - 29 qualified swimmers. We won’t win the overall but we’ll be very visible across the weekend.

Fairly tasty lineup in heat 7 of the 100 Free later on… ?
