The Official PROC Restaurant review thread.

Took my old man out for his birthday - as usual I suggested that he picked the place because he doesn't red eat meat/chicken.

I assumed that he'd opt for Goldie, which he can't find fault with and is Cork eatery - this is the Gold Standard (no pun intended) my old man is uber-critical - I am still mentally scarred from his Junior B match-day post-game analysis.

However, he chose Rossini - a restaurant that, even though it has been open in Cork for over 25 years, I have never eaten in in my life.

Now... I love Italian food and the kitchen staff in Rossini might have been having an off day but mine was absolutely terrible start to finish.

To start, I got the calamari which was fresh but that's about as good as it got. It was overcooked, oily/greasy and salted to fuckery. Accompanied by a few sad-looking leaves. Ate two pieces of the six served. Horrible.

My old man got the seafood crepe which he said was pretty good. If nothing else it was huge.

Then the mains - I got bucatini cacio e pepe - which was a gelatinous, sticky mess. The sauce was so thick that it had clumped the pasta into one giant nest. They had also flooded the thing with cheap pecarino and black pepper that the dish lost any subtlety. I ate a third of it and gave up.

The oul fella had farefalle with salmon in a white wine sauce - it looked marginally better than mine but really it was another gloopy mess.

The portion sizes are massive - I think that quantity is preferred over quality in this case.

Ordered a side of garlic bread - this arrived near the end of the meal. Absolute shite quality - it was piss poor white bread which was barely, heated nevermind toasted.

To quote Alan Partridge: "What you've got there Michael is warm, floppy bread."

2x Starter,
2x Main,
1x Garlic bread
1x small bottle San Pelegrino sparkling,
1x glass primitivo red,
1x espresso

€103.50 - excluding tip, the service was alright.

Oh... and then I was told that they don't accept tips on card - cash only for the tip. I had a tenner in my pocket so that's all they got which I felt bad about.

Left and walked my dad to his car. Asked him if he enjoyed it. He said that he did, that it wasn't as good as Goldie but he didn't want me spending too much money on him.

I informed him that Goldie wouldn't have been much more and felt like kicking his car.

Was Rossini ever decent? The menu that I got looks like lowest common denominator bollix and not really Italian in the truest form.

Haven't eaten there in 20 years or so.

It was shite then too.

Dunno how places like that keep going

As for Italians in Cork.

Got a terrible meal in the place on Bridge Street a couple of years ago and never went back.

Il Padrino isn't anything fancy but I've never had a bad meal there

:lol!: good man

I'm delighted with your review, my entire family was booked there for Christmas eve but we called it off as there would be a mountain of kids half interested at best and figured we would run a massive bill up for little reason. I didn't pick the restaurant and have never eaten there, but I was pitching for it as it is a hassle free way of getting everyone together. Its not cheap for that standard of fare either, you only had water, a glass of wine and a coffee

Da Mirco? I ate there about 18 months - it was dreadful, could not recommend.

Bella Napoli is alright - again, nothing fancy, but it's well executed.
I miss Star Anise that was there before Da Mirco - would have been our family spot, lovely people and great food, called it a day as they were just wrecked from the demands of the industry

Da Mirco gets good reviews on TA. https://www.tripadvisor.ie/Restaura...eviews-Da_Mirco_osteria-Cork_County_Cork.html

I only mention it because I've a family thing on in there soon and am now trepidatious about it considering noted foodies Dan and Crispy's reviews.
I think its one of them things, the food critics love it because it's authentic 'real' Italian bistro food. Octopus stew with black beans type stuff as a main. Theres nothing elegant or fine dining about it, but it is exactly what you might be served in a small family run place in Naples or somewhere

The proprietor (Mirco) is a lovely fella, mad to please, and he has a decent wine list as well. Its not really my cup of tea either though, but only because I'd prefer to eat something else as opposed to the food not being good. Ive eaten there 3 or 4 times I'd say, if we were going again next week I wouldn't mind but wouldn't be excited either.

Had dinner at Lottie's in Rathmines (up in that Dublin).

It's a Bib Gourmand gaff - modern European menu.

Some of the dishes were inspired - starters like ham hock tostada with miso infused apple puree and the monkfish with rhubarb & caviar. The steaks are very good as is the duck confit.

Other dishes were poor - the pork belly starter was gristled rubber. The gnocchi with house pesto was boring and the sea bass was fairly drab according to the people who were eating them. The brussel sprout satay sounded great on paper and then tasted as bland as said paper.

Overall, nice space, solid in the main.

5 people -
3x shared snacks as we looked at the menu
7x starters (one person had two starters for main),
4x main (2 steaks, 1 duck leg confit, 1 sea bass),
4x shared side dishes
1x dessert,
3x pints (2x Guinness, 1x Trouble Brewing Ambush),
3x cocktails,
1x glass of red wine (€13.50!! Mea culpa)

The bill came to just shy of €400.

Something struck me as odd so I glanced at the menu and back to the total and couldn't get it to add up. Then I copped that they had very generously added a service charge for themselves to my bill (12.5%) - for parties of 4 or more.

I normally tip 15 - 20% but if you feel the need to guide my hand then I will accept that and offer no more. The service was fairly lacking anyway.

When I went to pay, the machine gave me an option to tip another 15/20/25%. I mentioned that I had already had the service charge added to my bill.

"Yes, the extra tip is an option for if you feel that you've had exceptional service.

Skip.

I'm not tight. I'm not a fucking fool either.

I wouldn't recommend it at all.

The house red was a tenner and the little San Pelegrino was a fiver or something.
