The Official Premier League 2026/27 Thread

Souness mightn’t be everyones cup of tea but knows an awful lot about midfield play.

I find it hilarious on-line when Keane or Souness are talking about how a midfielder should play and modern fans deride them as clueless thugs and cavemen.

A 23 yr old Keane or Souness is a €200m player in this era.

Soeness at least articulates himself well and has some tactical acumen. Hes managed and won silverware at big clubs as well. I think he absolutely nails Declan Rice there. He was completely outplayed against Argentina. Hes a very limited footballer.

Keane has just descended into a sub Top Gear banteriffic routine with whichever plugs are lining up the jokes for him.

Excellent stuff on Souness. He calls it as he sees it. I remember how he took John Terry apart on RTE in the 2010 WC after the player gave an interview saying who should be in the England team.
I think that Keano is held back by the constraints of the TV channels tbh. They don't want pundits to be too direct or controversial.

Yeah i remember listening to Souness talk about an england game in 2010 WC in SA that was being played at altitude.

He was on about how they can acclimatise by either being there for 3 consecutive days or else get in there the morning of the game.

There was definitely more freedom on the RTE panel and zero fear of upsetting players etc and losing access.

He did a brilliant bit on Grealish a few years ago. Grealish was the most fouled player in the league.

All that meant to Souness is that he didn’t see the bigger picture on the field and hung on to the ball too long.

He conpared him to Scholes who never dwelled on the ball. He said he’d be chasing shadows v Scholes /Xavi but would love to sit on Grealish.

A super piece of analysis.

Keane is a major disappointment. He’s a media whore at this stage.

Neville same. He’s one of the best right backs of the last 40 years and you’d swear he was a useless clogger the way he talks. It’s fine to be humble but Ferguson wouldn’t carry a clogger. His trophy cabinet backs this up.

When Souness first came to Ireland to do TV he asked what wasn't he allowed to say? The RTE executives were genuinely surpriesed and just told him to give his honest opinions.

It makes for much better TV. I'D say you'd be sacked on Sky if you said the Premier league was rubbish. Or even a particular game. Euphemisms like "it's not been the best first half" abound.

Soeness talks a lot of sense. He was right about Pogba too, a complete fraud of a player.
