Its a belief system. All organised religion has a financial element, since year dot. Its been very fashionable with a long time to bash the church but the majority of priests and nuns are decent people who devoted their lives to a spiritual calling.

Its very easy to be cynical but is a fully secular society something to aspire to?

There was a moment when the truth was bursting out that the church could have come clean, and if it meant the Irish church went bankrupt,then so be it, they could have had the chance to rebuild. But they didn't. Instead, they lied, obfuscated and slow walked cooperation, which they are still doing. What's left is a hollowed out wreck, 90% mass attendance 40 years ago, 28% 3 years ago. But for the poles, Filipinos and Brazilians, a lot more than St Augustines would be shutting down.

Is a fully secular society something to aspire to?

Time will tell, but it's got to be better than a paedo hiding monster.

And all I'm saying is the Catholic Church consigned themselves to where they are now because of their own actions, blaming the people is only making it worse. But for immigrants the church would be sunk. In the mid 80s I used to collect at mass and probably would have done more as time moved on, but I was repulsed by the likes of Connelly and Brady, along with Cleary and the whole shower trying to convince us not to believe our lying eyes.

In general, religion is responsible for so many wars and so much hatred, indeed even now the CC is using its overbearing control over schools to artificially bolster communions and confirmations. This actually harms the CC because those controlling the church have a false impression of their strength.
