the official newcastle utd thread

yeah, you read right. what are you going to do about it?

stupidly, i'm cautiously optimistic this season. to be fair i've had no optimism since robson took over, so at least i can enjoy the off season. if we can sign a few defenders and maybe get rid of dyer to west ham we might do ok. i'd take top eight though, with a bit of a cup run.

fairly strong up front (owen, martins, shola, viduka) and in the middle (barton, butt, solano, possibly duff if he can be arsed).

hopefully this rozenhal dude will be good. i'd put taylor and right back or rotate he and carr and sign another centre half and left back. not a bad side then.

i like what Big Sam has done so far this summer. Viduka wil be a fantastic signing for them . Allardyce will set the team up perfectly for him him. As much as I think Barton is a scut , he'll be very good there.

If he can get their defence right , they challenge Spurs for Fifth , I reckon.

Newcastle rocked by Barton injury

Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton will miss the start of the season after fracturing a metatarsal in Saturday's 1-1 friendly draw with Carlisle.

Barton will have surgery on the foot on Monday and is set to be sidelined for about six weeks.

A statement on the club website said: "He sustained a partial fracture of the fifth metatarsal in his left foot."

The 24-year-old England international only joined the Magpies in a £5.8m deal from Manchester City in June.

Striker Michael Owen was omitted from the Newcastle line-up because of a minor thigh strain.

The 27-year-old England star picked up the injury in training.

Barton made his debut for the Magpies against Hartlepool on Tuesday and captained the side at Carlisle.

Owen scored his first Newcastle goal in more than 19 months and Barton played well as Sam Allardyce's reign as manager began with a 3-1 win at Hartlepool.
